Reporting directly to the Quality manager, the quality engineer is a critical leader in monitoring and leading Quality and Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) key performance indicators and processes in the facility. This position has evolved to a new focus and skill competency. A large portion of the new focus and skill competency will require working with management, the engineering and project management team, and production supervisors to create new processes/metrics and streamline & standardize existing processes/metrics, while still maintaining production operational flow, established business goals, deliverables and key performance indicators. This position is instrumental in introducing and assisting manufacturing and engineering management in implementing the process improvement methodology and using the appropriate tools and gated process to drive positive change within the company culture and deliver tangible results, either through reduction of COPQ (cost of poor quality), productivity process improvement or redesign. This position requires a “hands on” approach and will be tactical, engaging in daily production/engineering meetings and project task completion.
Functions and Responsibilities
Engages in “end to end” quality and continuous process improvement initiatives throughout the facility. This includes, but is not limited to partnering with Engineering and Product Development to insure critical to quality dimensions are included in engineering drawing and design considerations, and that First Article Inspection criteria is comprehensive and accurate.
Experience, confidence and maturity to make decisions and act without constant supervision and direction, and to feel comfortable and thrive in a matrix managed organization.
Understands and communicates “the voice of the customer” (externally and internally) and works in a team effort to help the internal customers define and establish quality and process improvement priorities.
Assesses, evaluates and identifies product quality and process quality improvement opportunities, working closely with the various functions to develop the project plans and provide leadership to the team utilizing the appropriate approach, utilizing quality/CPI tools and assisting in training as required.
Maintains reports, databases and assists with the management of the quality system, to include supplier quality scorecards and corrective action, customer corrective action requirements, manufacturing dashboards, the quality manual and CPI project tracker.
Immediately addresses quality issues, by notifying proper personnel, as well as taking appropriate actions, to include, but not limited to implementing containment action and drilling into detailed root cause analysis.
Utilizes quality data to develop appropriate in process inspection and sampling plans and provides guidance to the quality technician to insure proper inspection and testing on materials and components and maintaining documentation throughout the manufacturing process. When required, and in the absence of the quality technician, the quality engineer will conduct inspection and testing requirements.
When required, makes decision to accept/reject based on inspection results, classification of defects, special instructions
Notifies quality management and key personnel when material/component fails to meet inspection/test standards
Leads internal audits and Corrective Action activities (both internal and external)
Follows safety policies and insures good housekeeping in work areas (5S)
Ability to do other duties as assigned
Education & Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or operations management required
Blackbelt certification a plus
Professional certifications via ASQ or APICS a plus
Comfortable with technical specifications, engineering drawings, working with testing laboratories and ASTM’s.
Experience working with precision measuring equipment, standard inspection instruments and gages is required.
Experience and knowledge of GMP’s and ISO9000
Computer, telephone, smartphone, Microsoft office suite of products, Epicor, Minitab, MILSTD, AQL’s, ASTM’s, valid sampling plan
