What You Will Do
The W78 Systems Engineering Group (W-3) is responsible for technical and programmatic oversight of matters pertaining to the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) W78 Nuclear Weapon System. The selected candidate will provide general system engineering support within the W78 System Engineering Group. This role includes oversight of the engineering, management, integration, and sustainment of the W78 nuclear explosive package (NEP) through its remaining lifecycle.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Primary responsibility will be to serve as the W78 system lead on the integrated surety architecture (ISA) project.
Provide engineering expertise for local and joint test experiments in support of the W78.
Provide general system engineering support for W78 sustainment.
Provide engineering expertise to resolve W78 technical and programmatic issues as they arise.
Interface with comparable colleagues at other laboratories and Production Agencies (PAs), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Defense (DoD), principally the United States Air Force (USAF) and their contractors.
Represent LANL at Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Sustainment Project Officer’s Group (POG) subgroup meetings as deemed necessary by the W-3 Group Leader.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices. Demonstrated experience with one of the following: engineering design, fabrication, or testing. Familiarity with basic principles associated with the design, development, qualification, certification, assembly, production, surveillance, and/or testing of a component or system. Familiarity with relevant classification guidance and demonstrate commitment to Laboratory goals in assuring the security of classified information.
Demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision. A frequent amount of travel may be required due to programmatic complexity and frequent interactions with various NNSA and United States Air Force customers as well as National Security Enterprise (NSE) Production Agencies (PAs).
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel including internal and external customers, as well as experience with conflict resolution.
Knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile. Functional knowledge of the W78 or other weapon systems, component design, development, qualification, assembly, production, surveillance, or high explosives. Familiarity with weapon systems mechanical and electrical interfaces. Demonstrated experience with assembly and /or disassembly practices applicable to the W78 or other weapon systems.
Systems Engineering Tools
Familiarity with computer-aided design tools such as CREO and associated model-based system engineering design techniques. Knowledge of subsystem and system qualification testing practices. Knowledge of engineering authorization systems, document management systems (e.g., PDM Link or like software) and applications to stockpile maintenance and configuration management.
Applicants must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Educational requirement is an advanced degree from an accredited engineering college or university program. An MS or PhD in mechanical, aerospace, electrical, civil, system engineering or engineering mechanics preferred.
Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
New-Employment Drug Test:
- Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
