We are seeking a skilled Automation Engineer (AE) with industry experience to lead systems automation of Benson Hill Biosystems biotechnology laboratories. The AE works closely with biological scientists to identify needs and establish metrics for operational quality, throughput, and accuracy. Development, integration, implementation, and maintenance of systems that automate processes will be primary responsibilities. Strong familiarity with biological laboratory automation is a must.

You’ll make an impact by:
  • Identify opportunities for systems automation of biological laboratory processes
  • Establish system metrics, budgets, timelines and implementation plans
  • Interact with external system and service providers in identifying optimal solutions
  • Prioritize options, establish plans, and gain buy-in of stakeholders and approval from leadership for implementation
  • Implement and maintain systems
  • Collaborate with the Benson Hill engineering team on an array of projects supporting research and development activities.
Requirements:
You have:
  • PhD or MS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Instrumentation / mechatronics / Robotics experience (preferably in bio, chemistry or medical lab) preferred
  • Hardware wiring, programming, troubleshooting skills
  • Proficiency in Python programming is a must, C# as a good add-on
  • Arduino experience
  • Familiarity with analytical equipment is a strong plus
  • Strong communication skills in multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience with a wide variety of automation components with strong hands-on, problem solving skills, mechanically inclined
  • Solid understanding of biological R&D operations and systems
  • Effective project manager, action-oriented and able to deliver timely results
  • Strong organization and problem-solving capabilities
