About Transmission and Distribution
Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.
The Senior Structural/Civil Engineer will provide technical leadership on major transmission projects related but not limited to mitigating and improving transmission, sub-transmission and distribution Poles and Towers structural analysis. Develops and updates transmission and distribution design functional specifications, interfaces with cross functional organizations to provide transmission and distribution structural support to SCE’s internal and external clients. Leads the effort in the development of new structure types and provides structural procurement support. Consults on structural specifications, analysis of rule changes relating to structures and pole loading software development. Tasks associated with these functions include structural loading calculations, material deviation recommendations, and Operation & Maintenance support. Manages the design, schedule and cost development of overhead line structures. Leads a team of engineers to develop and approve new and modified equipment and hardware for the engineering department. This position will report to the Manager of Poles and Towers Structural Analysis.
Responsibilities may include:
Cross training engineers on structural design and analysis topics while providing coaching and mentoring
Functioning as a technical leader for T&D Engineering to advise, consult T&D Leadership on major projects and issues, leading highly technical team to solve field issues, presenting to leadership and gaining support.
Managing, resources, constraints, leveraging external consulting resources to optimize output to support T&D capital projects.
Demonstrated ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in.
Effectively interfaces with external engineering consultants and material suppliers.
Ability to accurately analyze information, make strategic decisions/recommendations, and guide others’ decision making by identifying the anticipated benefits, consequences, and impacts of alternatives.
Takes the initiative and accountability for the accuracy of information and for achieving results.
Drives strategic standards development that will form the basis for new equipment and materials.
Integrates work across relevant areas, develops the business and services to enhance customer satisfaction and productivity, manages risks and safety appropriately, develops and executes business plans, manages information, and provides exceptional service to internal and external customers.
Effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation
Bachelor's Degree in Structural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or related engineering degree.
Nine or more years of engineering experience
Seven or more years of technical experience in transmission, and/or substation engineering
Demonstrated proficiency in PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole, SAG10
Five or more years of technical experience performing design and analysis of structure foundations
Ability to use Finite Element Analysis tools for structure modeling
Knowledge and experience in the design and analysis of lattice towers and poles.
Master's Degree in Engineering – Structural Emphasis
Experience in SAP2000, SPiDA, AUTO-CADD
California PE License- Structural
Engineering experience with Electric Utility Distribution and Transmission Systems using California GO95, NESC and ASCE codes and guidelines..
Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.
Position will require around 20% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
