TPI is a recognized industry leader in composite materials design, testing and manufacturing. The company specializes in the fabrication of composite structures for the electric transportation market.
TPI is looking for a Tooling Engineer, a Mechanical Engineer who works in the Tooling Department, to specialize in tooling and fixturing for composites manufacturing, specifically for the transportation market. Key emphasis will be on ability to understand complex assemblies and components, and to translate these into tools and fixtures that enable parts to be completed on time and on budget.
Tool Design: Specification, modelling and drawing of - A surface, B surface, flow and vacuum paths, ports, seals, ejectors, frame/weldments, alignment features, clamps, etc. Review and critique 2D drawings. Work closely with design engineering to feedback molding limitations into part design and establish best practices going forward.
Tool Fabrication: Specify and source master plugs and finished molds, develop tool fabrication schedules, source tool materials and components. And manage the fabrication process.
Tool Commissioning: Develop and manage tool qualification activities and utilize laser tracker metrology systems. Support all first article inspection requirements for tooling, prototyping, and PPAP events as part of the design lifecycle.
Fixture Design: Design innovative fixtures for in mold or post mold processing of composite structures and ancillary bonded components, using proven composite bonding and fastening techniques. 3D modelling of simple, or complex assemblies, using various CAD packages. Perform tolerance stack-ups and fully understand GD&T. Generate drawings/models for in-house or vendor fabrication.
Fixture Build: Closely manage the fabrication/building of fixtures by vendors, or by in-house machine shop. Ensure fit and function and make rapid modifications or adjustments as necessary.
Fixture Commission: Manage the implementation of fixturing into the manufacturing process. Qualify dimensional requirements with laser tracker metrology equipment. Establish feedback systems with production and quality departments.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 2-5 years relevant work experience
Transportation composites or other composites experience
Proficient in 3D CAD modelling
Desired Skills and Education
Composite tooling design experience with RTM, VARTM, pultrusion, and L-RTM processes
Bonding fixture design and qualification experience
Assembly fixture design and qualification experience
Experience designing and fabricating steel weldments for tooling bracing
Fundamental understanding of composite component fabrication and materials
Background in prototyping of composite components
Proficient in CATIA and SolidWorks
All Microsoft Office software including Project
Great problem solving and communication skills
Ability to work on projects demanding fast prototype/production startups
Ability to work with vendors, customers and employees
Experience leading high performance teams in a fast-paced environment
Ability to maintain safe work environment
Maintain clean work documentation and file organization.
Manage work priorities effectively
