The Jefferson Lab Scientific Computing Department is part of the Jefferson Lab Computational Sciences and Technology (CST) division and is responsible for the support of scientific computing projects at the laboratory. We are seeking applicants for a position in High Performance Computing (HPC) technology specialist to support the lab’s theoretical hadronic research program with emphasis on Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) calculations and High Throughput Computing (HTC) data analysis projects for experimental nuclear physics. The successful candidate will closely interact with staff members in the Scientific Computing department, the Scientific Computing Operations group and researchers from both Theory Center and physics division to contribute to Jefferson Lab computational projects, to further existing mission needs for LQCD computing programs and to advance technology capabilities along with computing capacities for data analysis and machine learning.
Essential Job Functions:
Conduct computer system architectural research and work with other lab staffs to design and deploy HPC and HTC computing systems that are optimal in terms of performance to cost ratio, reliability, configurability, and ease of maintenance within a given budget. Specifically, collaborate with other national laboratories, liaise with computer industries, and work with vendors to devise a system design by incorporating proven and upcoming hardware/software technologies. Carry out performance evaluation of a prospective system, which includes assessment of all its subsystems such as CPU, GPU, memory, I/O and networking, by benchmarking the systems using both industrial standard and Jefferson Lab application specific benchmark suite. Recommend system design options to the department and followed by tuning and debugging an acquired system to achieve designed performance specification for the system. Work with the operation group to integrate the system into existing Jefferson Lab computing infrastructure. Provide detailed usage and optimization guides of the system to general application users. Help users to optimize HPC applications and occasionally assist users to debug their code. Finally, offer the operation team insightful knowledge of the systems when needed.
Education, Certifications and Experience:
Master in computer science, computer engineering, or related field with 10+ years experience is required
Experience of working in a high performance computing environment or a large data center is preferred and the software development in HPC is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge of computer and computer system architecture relevant to the HPC and HTC computational domains. Deep understanding of standard HPC and other computing benchmark suite is highly desirable.
Expert knowledge in performance optimization for both serial and parallel programs on CPUs and GPUs. Deep understanding of the performance requirements for memory bound, I/O bound and CPU bound applications. Demonstrated knowledge of domain specific computer system architectures.
Experienced in design and operating a HPC system or a computing cluster.
Proficient in C/C++, Python.
Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge or experience in the following areas:
Developing parallel software using OpenMP and MPI.
Programming and managing GPU systems.
Lattice QCD computing.
Collaboration with computer industries.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
