In the VES Build Services team we design, develop, deploy and support services in a private cloud that can build, sign and package software. We want our services to be secure, efficient, and performant. Over 10,000 VMware engineers use our services every day as part of their code-build-test workflow. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
On the journey to provide a secure, reliable and performant build environment, you will:
Learn about the build system and how developers interact with the system
Contribute to a project that directly impacts developer productivity at VMware. Some example themes that we are working on right now include:
improving the security posture of our services
standardizing test & deployment configuration of our services
improving capacity utilization in our private cloud
creating new services to manage our system more transparently and efficiently
Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
- Developing services and tools that are a part of the Build System. We primarily use Python, we also develop some services in Java and Golang.
- Developing unittests, system tests and deployment configurations for the services and tools. We deploy services in VMs and k8s clusters.
- Debugging bottlenecks to optimize performance and improve capacity utilization
- Designing new services (or improvements to current services) in the Build System
- Developing tools and code to automate manual steps in the pipeline and optimize existing steps.
- Working with Infrastructure as a Code (IaaS) solutions to automate deployment and management of scalable services.
- Employing a DevOps mindset to ensure success within the team and among partner teams.
- Using tools such as GitLab, Jenkins, Artifactory, Docker, Bazel, Kubernetes, Puppet, SaltStack and others.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
This position reports to the Manager of the Build Team, a VMware veteran who has been a software engineer. The team consists of highly competent, passionate engineers. We focus on iterative development, both of software and our software development practices.
You will initially be part an established team that has a wide range of responsibilities, spanning the entire software stack including managing a dedicated virtual environment. This is a great opportunity for someone who likes a broad range of responsibilities and is comfortable in providing high availability services relied upon by your colleagues.
The team culture is one based on sharing knowledge for ongoing development, building trust and participating in social events along with giving back to the community through service learning.

The role is based out of VMware's US office and is open to remote candidates.
