The Manager will lead the Engineering Development and Reliability Testing team in providing physical testing support for the planning and execution of new product development and current product validation testing.The role will provide engineering direction to continually advance test methodologies and technologies to increase productivity, accuracy, capability, and safety within the lab. The position will manage all operational aspects of the product development labs including dynamometer, endurance, acoustics and vibration, instrumentation, dynamics, materials, emissions, and component testing. The Manager will provide direct leadership to the Wisconsin test lab team and coordinate with local leadership at the Brest, Changzhou and Singapore test labs with respect to the test processes and utilization of test equipment to facilitate test result correlation across all four facilities.
Provide daily management of assignments, schedules, and prioritization for staff of direct reports including engineers and technicians. Assign, prioritize, and coordinate tasks to be performed as necessary. Insure established protocols are maintained regarding test procedures, records, calibrations, and data storage.
Direct the management of engineering staff assigned to lab areas, including a training/mentoring program for new hires and engineering students. Also direct the management of supervisory staff responsible for test scheduling and technician support.
Develop, track and ensure compliance to established expense and miscellaneous capital budget forecasts and spending.
Develop and maintain engineer and technician training programs for other Kohler Power Systems lab facilities.
Lead and conduct performance appraisals. Manage direct reports by leveraging the various tools and processes available within Kohler including engagement survey results, MaxP, Individual Development Plans, SKIP meetings, and GAPS.
Develop and maintain resource planning tools to determine proper staffing levels for support of workload based on business product development strategy and individual program forecasts.
Maintain job descriptions and competency models and cross-training matrix for engineer, supervisor, and technician associates assigned to lab.
Lead the continuous improvement of component, subsystem, fired-engine, and application-based testing methods that reduce product development cycle time and cost.
Lead the development of new accelerated testing methods based on in-use, field data acquisition systems and material properties to deliver representative failure modes in shorter time periods.
Provide direction to lab engineering staff for development and maintenance of all lab test procedures required to support engine development and validation.
Identify and implement new instrumentation technologies and test equipment that increase test accuracy and repeatability as well as minimize variation between multiple test cells.
Develop and maintain workflow process map for all lab areas. Also develop, manage, and report continuous improvement metrics for each lab area based on workflow process, lab inputs, productivity, and output.
Coordinate the planning, development of technical specifications, and implementation of new lab testing equipment and facilities in coordination with Brest lab facility.
Work with the Application Engineering, Marketing, and Sales groups to identify and benchmark customer testing methodologies to correlate in-house test methodology.
Develop and maintain test duty cycles based on customer-use data for applications testing.
Research and develop relationships with outside testing suppliers for overflow capacity and unique test capabilities.
Ensure data integrity by conducting round-robin testing.
B.S. degree in an engineering from an ABET accredited program with 10+ years of relevant work experience in piston engine design and development, or a master’s degree in Engineering with 5 or more years of work experience. Strongly prefer spark-ignited engine experience.
Experience with combustion and exhaust gas chemistry, fuel chemistry, electronic control operation, test labs operations, test facility systems, and material properties.
Experience (+) with governmental agencies including Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), California Air Resources Board (CARB) and regulations pertaining to exhaust and evaporative emissions compliance.
Experience (+) with worldwide and regional manufacturing associations including Underwriters Laboratories (UL, Lloyds, Engine Manufactures Association (EMA) and Outdoor Power Equipment Industry (OPEI)).
Knowledge (+) of U.S. Governmental Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 40 Chapter I Subchapter U Part 1065, for maintaining a certified emissions test system(s).
Track record of progressively increasing responsibilities within an engineering management team including leadership of supervisors and individual contributors as direct reports.
Knowledge (+) of engines, generators, and fuel systems.
