The Management Engineer is an internal consultant, teacher, facilitator, coach, and project manager who targets strategic projects focused on high impact capacity, patient flow and throughput improvement opportunities in the hospital.
The Management Engineer will play a lead role in the application of management science/operations research and analytical methods to help make better strategic and operational decisions and to leverage this information in a practical manner to improve operational performance and efficiency. Analytical technologies that may be used are simulation, optimization, and probability and statistics. This is accomplished by identifying and eliminating waste, eliminating bottlenecks and improving processes. Additionally, culture change is accomplished through teaching, facilitation and coaching to break down functional barriers, enhance teamwork among multi-disciplinary improvement teams, and leveraging rapid-cycle improvement techniques to achieve operational efficiencies.
This position provides an important leadership role related to the Health Center's labor cost management. This position impacts the staffing and labor costs of approximately $106 million and 1,874 full time equivalents.
This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of an accurate and effective productivity monitoring system for Southwest General Health Center.
The Management Engineer will plan, implement and/or coordinate operational improvement initiatives. In addition, the Management Engineer will assist management in decision-making regarding ongoing projects and the development of improvement initiatives.
This position is expected to provide analytical services and support related to cost containment and productivity improvement projects.
Education: Minimum - Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering or related field; Preferred - Master of Science in Industrial Engineering or related field. Critical skills include proficiency in quantitative and statistics. The incumbent must be able to effectively communicate technical information to all management levels. Project management skills are important to the position's leadership role of this important function. Good working knowledge of financial accounting concepts and terminology is required.
Required length and type of experience: Minimum of five years of healthcare management engineering experience, including work with productivity systems, benchmarking as well as operational improvement projects. Experience to include interaction with hospital leadership throughout the organization, including clinical line supervisor and managers as well as at the executive level.
Required licensure, certification or registry: None required, certification in Six Sigma, Lean or project management is preferred.
