Manufacturing Engineer

JOB SUMMARY: The Manufacturing Engineer leads new product design & development and supports productivity and process efficiency work in STC’s extrusion/glaze department. They will drive development of standards, procedures, and process controls while supporting technical projects to increase yields and reduce costs to achieve overall process optimization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Drive new product development for ceramic extrusion process; define and characterize requirements for all unit processes including extrusion body formulation, batching, and forming process.

2. Provide engineering support for glazing process, including glaze formulation design, milling, slurry handling and application.

3. Design process tooling per customer specifications, and provide estimates of cost and lead time to support on-time delivery of product

4. Perform design reviews with sales/customers that incorporate a detail-oriented perspective on the impact of the forming process on surface finish, dimensional accuracy and projected overall integrity of produced parts.

5. Grow innovation capability to expand the complexity of parts in STC’s portfolio, introduce new materials/powders and advance equipment and technology

6. Contribute to the identification, justification and implementation of capital equipment and engineering projects to support manufacturing objectives

7. Drive process improvements affecting yields, capacity, cycle times and cost

8. Optimize machine and material process parameters based on LEAN principles, DOE, statistical analysis and materials science

9. Work closely with production personnel in process tracking, optimization, and troubleshooting

10. Provide technical support to resolve manufacturing disruptions, then develop and implement permanent, sustainable countermeasures to prevent reoccurrence

11. Develop and deliver training materials in areas identified that require increased organizational awareness and/or functional knowledge

12. Interface with sales and business development team to assist customers in production build programs

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

1. Bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering, materials science or related technical field

2. Process engineering and design

3. Project management experience

4. Statistical process control and analysis

5. Lean manufacturing fundamentals & structured problem-solving skills

6. Strong organizational, analytical and troubleshooting skills

7. Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills

8. Excellent time management skills

9. Ability to work independently

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

1. 5yrs+ engineering experience in a manufacturing facility

2. Mechanical aptitude and proficiency with drafting software such as AutoCAD or Solidworks

3. Die tooling and design

4. New product development from prototype to production

5. Understanding of ceramic material formulations and shrinkage characteristics in forming processes

6. Thermal processing/sintering of ceramic materials
