A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER
As a Design & Development Engineer for Medical Device R&D, you design and develop various catheters for new business contracts. You prepare catheter design concepts and conduct engineering design reviews. Your research and development work involves sustaining engineering, engineering analysis, animal studies, pre-clinical studies, clinical studies, and documentation. You are skilled in force, stress, strain, tolerance, materials, process capability, and industry standards analysis. Your documentation includes essential standard elements such as engineering drawings, engineering characterization reports, assembly procedures, flowcharts, test plans, and test reports. Working independently, you plan and schedule activities necessary to meet timelines.
With attention to detail, you carefully design and coordinate the execution of catheter engineering experiments and formal verification tests. You design, procure, and fabricate the tooling and fixtures needed for your research and development. As a capable problem solver, you perform troubleshooting on problems with new catheter products as related to design, material, or process. You analyze, summarize, and draw conclusions from your test results. Through complete and accurate reports, you share your results with the technical community. As you invent concepts and designs for new catheter products and processes, you submit invention disclosures. A life-long learner, you keep informed of new developments that could affect your projects and maintain an understanding of customers, markets, and competitors.
Though you do spend a lot of time working independently, your job is also highly collaborative. You work cooperatively with marketing, manufacturing, process development, quality, regulatory, and clinical entities to ensure project success. With support from management, you also have opportunities to help train and provide work direction to engineering support personnel. Your high-quality deliverables demonstrate the excellent grasp that you have on the standard catheter product development process, business process, and related systems. You find your job very engaging and get great satisfaction out of driving the development of the catheter medical device manufacturing processes from prototype assembly through to production manufacturing!
