Facebook Reality Labs is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. At the Pittsburgh lab, we aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people can interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions. As a Mechanical Engineer at FRL, you will develop state of the art prototype structures, mechanisms, and solutions for next generation near to eye display (NED) and Imaging Systems to create transformative experiences. You will become part of a team exploring new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams; can brainstorm big ideas; work in new technology areas; able to drive a concept into a prototype; and can envision how a prototype could transition into a high-volume consumer product. Starting with a broad scientific background, be willing to become a quick expert in a new area, and quickly build new prototypes using novel materials and/or by integrating structures in new ways leveraging a strong mechanical background. We are looking for a hands-on builder of opto-mechanical systems that can deal with sub-micron tolerances.
Lead Opto/Mechanical Engineering efforts in a cross-functional team environment
Be able to brainstorm new architectures and converge on feasible mechanical designs
Build, test, and refine prototypes and/or high precision test fixtures
Provide mechanical guidance to greater team of researchers and hardware engineers
Push state of the art technologies and approaches to solving complex mechanical problems
BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
2+ years of product design and prototyping experience
Experience in 3D modeling
Knowledge of manufacturing techniques (machining, 3D printing, injection molding, etc.)
Experience designing for the mechanical constraints of PCBs, FPCs, etc.
Testing and analysis experience (FEA, simulation, ray tracing, ZMAX, etc.)
M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
5+ years of experience in Opto-Mechanical product design
Experience in NX or SolidWorks including Teamcenter/PDM
Experience designing and prototyping of head mounted optics systems
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) knowledge and practical application for precision optics or other components
Familiarity with camera modules and optical systems
Knowledge of materials and structural modeling/optimization
