As a Firefly Launch Vehicle Design Engineer, you will leverage your creative background and expertise to help develop innovative solutions for the application of space technology. You will work closely with subsystem Responsible Engineers (REs) to translate requirements and design intent to physical models and associated drawings. You will work in small collaborative groups through all stages of the component and system design including conceptual architecture layout, preliminary design, sizing, detail design, fabrication instruction writing and liaison shop support. You will have full ownership of your projects from the initial concept through all phases of the design, analysis, manufacturing, and final integration of your parts.
Drive the design and development of new, innovative concepts for our vehicles across a multitude of areas including propulsion, fluid systems, metallic structures, and/or composite structures.
Interface with fabrication shop to determine manufacturing shortfalls in component design and/or drawing practices
Collaborate with Analysis, Test, and Launch to optimize designs for performance and reliability.
Detailed Drafting of part and assembly drawings following GD&T company drafting standards.
Use engineering principles and fundamentals to provide novel solutions for technically challenging problems
Perform due diligence analysis on designs including hand calcs
Demonstrate a willingness to seek creative, new and different ways to accomplish outcomes.
BS from accredited college or university in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related engineering discipline
2+ years of focused, hands on experience in either Mechanical, Structural and/or Fluid Systems Design
Exceptional comprehension of design fundamentals including tolerancing, ASME Standards, ASTM, and GD&T.
Must have strong CAD experience, preferably in AutoDesk Inventor
Knowledge of fabrication, welding, machining and assembly practices is required.
Experience in an R&D or Aerospace environment is a plus
Must be capable of working in a hands-on constantly evolving environment
Experience with harnessing is a strong plus
Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure fast-paced environment
Works well in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment and able to follow direction.
Unafraid to speak up and ask questions and capable of drawing novel conclusions
Recognize the importance/gravity of the main project.
Willingness to learn and operate under non-standard procedures
