Under the supervision of the Utility Supervisor and direction of the maintenance team leader, operates and maintains equipment and machinery used in a high pressure, cogeneration power plant which includes steam and gas turbines as well as diesel generators.
Monitors and operates auxiliary systems including main steam and condensate distribution, feed water treatment, fuel, potable water, fire prevention, compressed air, chilled water, condenser water, waste water treatment, and electrical grid. Maintains logs and/or necessary paperwork as required by the operation. Power house operating (PHO) engineers will perform maintenance on any equipment or facilities which their skills support in a compliant quality manner. PHO engineers are part of the Utilities Technician work group and will primarily share work assignments within their job grouping with no inherent or "system imposed" limits. Based on business needs Utilities Technicians will perform maintenance activities including crossing between job groupings where skills are common, work assignments, buildings, and equipment are not exclusive to any craft, job grouping, or employee. Education Minimum Requirement:
High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a recognized trade school with a minimum of 480 hours of course work in boiler operation and control similar to the Navy Boiler Technician (BT) "A" School or the Navy Machinist Mate "A" School augmented with the BT curriculum. A minimum of 1500 hours of hands-on, operating casualty drill training and experience similar to the Navy Boiler Technician Petty II Officer 3rd Class (E4), US Merchant Marine QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine Department) with steam vessel discharge documentation or the modified Navy Machinist Mate Petty Officer 3rd class (E4) which includes BI job responsibilities.
Required Experience and Skills:
Three years recent (within last 10 years) full-time experience (6,000 hours) operating large industrial boilers/power plant equipment OR recently served as a U.S. Navy Boiler Technician, OR US. Navy Machinist Mate (including BT job responsibilities), with a minimum of 3,000 hours as a Boiler Top watch underway OR Machinist Mate Top watch underway and obtained a rank of BI2 (ES) or 'MM2 (ES). Candidate must be able to document previous full-time experience and be able to answer comprehensive questions about boiler operation, control, and power generation in an interview.
Operating experience with the following systems: Boilers, feed water heaters, compressors, pumps, fuel handling equipment, water filters, plant steam equipment, potable water, compressed air and auxiliary systems. Automated control systems, chillers, cooling towers, de-ionized water units, combustion/steam turbines, electric generators, synchronizers, computerized automated control systems, internal combustion engines, and electric generation/distribution.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Boiler Technician Petty Officer 2nd Class (E5)/3rd Assistant Engineer Unlimited Tonnage License/Suitable State Seal/Machinist Mate Petty Office 2Â°d Class (ES) that includes BT job responsibilities.
Ability to read blueprints, drawings, etc.; ability to analyze equipment problems, and take appropriate corrective action; ability to operate computers to input or retrieve information as necessary; ability to safely use hand tools and various power tools in the performance of routine maintenance . Able to work unsupervised with effective communication skills
