A Senior Researcher is responsible for the initiation, design, development, execution and implementation of scientific research projects which are critical to corporate strategies. A person in this position will provide technical leadership and effective collaboration to support R&D projects, design, and testing activities under direction of senior personnel. They will mentor and lead other personnel to advance Virent’s continued research. Senior Researchers lead projects that require advanced knowledge of current scientific literature together with capability to select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions for unrealized or undiscovered opportunities at Virent
Adhere to Virent’s EHS policies and procedures, participate in EHS programs and conduct work activities in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
Adhere to Virent’s legal, finance, HR and other policies and procedures as they pertain to Research & Development.
Work effectively with teams of engineers, chemists, operators, machinists, and managers to design new pilot plants and/or solve issues with current pilot plants.
Maintain a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theory.
Use professional concepts in accordance with company objectives to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways.
Originate, plan, and conduct research and development of new catalytic processes for the conversion of biomass to hydrocarbon liquid fuels under direction of senior personnel.
Act as technical advisor on project process within related disciplines through innovative research.
Make decisions on work programs and monitor project and program costs.
Serve as in-house and outside consultant as assigned.
Lead day to day operations of associated resources including pilot plants and/or analysis equipment.
Essential Technical Responsibilities and Duties
Lead research, fabrication, and testing of catalytic materials for the aqueous-phase reforming of biomass-derived compounds.
Lead and conduct catalyst lifetime testing, determine deactivation mechanism, and determine associated regeneration procedures.
Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential research and projects.
Advance understanding of heterogeneous catalytic systems, including catalyst fabrication, catalyst characterization, chemical thermodynamics, and interpretation of reaction kinetics results.
Understand catalyst characterization techniques such as surface area measurements, spectroscopic characterization (e.g. infrared and XRD techniques), and elemental analysis.
Knowledge of catalysis systems applied to biomass-derived compounds or related materials.
Proficient with analyzing reaction kinetic data, including reaction kinetics modeling.
Collaborate with the Research & Development management to progress the strategic research path forward.
Represent the organization as prime technical contact on contracts or projects as assigned.
Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses.
Acts as advisor to top management and third parties on advanced technical research and applications.
Often act as mentor and routinely acts as project leader.
Key contributor to scientific literature and conferences.
Lead efforts on characterization of catalytic materials.
Develop reaction kinetics models of aqueous-phase reforming systems.
Routinely interact with other departments including daily interactions in Plant Operations and Analytical to reach project and assignment completion.

Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or appropriate field
Five to eight years related experience.
Advanced understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals. Projects require expert and extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories in area of expertise. Experience with catalyst synthesis and characterization, pilot plant operations, reaction kinetic testing and model development, catalyst lifetime testing, and analytical techniques (e.g. GC, HPLC, GCMS). Proficiency in Excel, Power Point, Word, and Outlook. SharePoint experience preferred but not required. Aspen Plus or Unisim process simulation experience.
