As a Junior-Intermediate Level Fire Protection Engineer/Building Code Consultant, the successful candidate's responsibilities would include:
Completing plans reviews to identify areas of noncompliance with respect to the applicable building and fire codes, and the development of subsequent approaches to achieve prescriptive compliance.
In instances where prescriptive code compliance is not feasible/desirable, the development of performance-based alternative solutions utilizing techniques such as fire and egress modelling, research and literature reviews, heat transfer analyses, smoke management, fire detection and suppression, and other fire protection engineering principles.
Completing site reviews involving both new and existing construction (occasional travel may be required).
Fire safety planning.
Report and letter preparation.
Attending meetings with clients, contractors, design teams, owners, etc.
It is expected that a certain amount of peer-to-peer on the job training will be required for the successful candidate.
An undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline with current status or eligibility for licensing as an EIT or P.Eng.,
A technical post-secondary education with current status or eligibility for registration as a CET/P.Tech, or
An undergraduate degree in architecture with current status or eligibility for licensing as a Registered Architect.
Three to five years' experience in the engineering, architecture, or construction industries would be considered an asset.
Any experience with a professional consulting engineering or professional architecture firm would be considered an asset.
Experience with the Part 3 of the National Building Code of Canada, the National Fire Code of Canada, the International Building Code, or similar NFPA standards would be considered an asset.
Experience with modelling software packages such as Fire Dynamics Simulator, PyroSim, Pathfinder, etc. would be considered an asset.
Proficient in reading technical drawings and specifications.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
The standard work week is 37.5 hours, but the position will require additional hours on occasion. The salary will be commensurate with the level of experience.
