We continue to research and develop treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, pediatric cancers and other orphan diseases.
How you’ll contribute
Conduct and assist in research efforts to develop novel cell- and tissue- based products for treating pulmonary hypertension and other lung diseases, including engineered lung tissues.
Complete a focused research project to address a question that is relevant to the development of a cell- or tissue-based product for the treatment of lung disease(s).
Generate data that addresses an insightful question, produce summary report(s) and conclusions to document the outcomes of experimental testing.
Present data to management, team leaders, and research staff at poster session and team meeting. The research project will be chosen based upon the background of the applicant as well as the needs of the research team. Examples of research projects include:
Determine the critical requirements for differentiation of lung airway stem cells, in relation to the suitability to generate functional lung constructs.
Design and develop a relevant analytical assay to assess the function or potency of an exosome product that is currently in clinical development.
Construct mathematical models of pulmonary flow based on physiological measurements and anatomy.
Adapt and utilize fatigue testing methodology to examine durability of native, decellularized, and recellularized lung.
Examine characteristics of engineered lung tissues to provide insight into factors that impact tissue function, such as cell coverage and distribution, tissue structure analysis, cell phenotype & protein expression, and cell cycle analysis.
Key job responsibilities
Follow prescribed laboratory methods and protocols.
Record laboratory data in the in-house data management system(s).
Regularly present plans and data with scientists, engineers, and laboratory staff.
Laboratory activities may involve the following, depending on the objectives of the research project:
Perform analytical and bioanalytical assays to characterize cellular phenotypes and/or matrix composition (Western Blot, PCR, flow cytometry, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence).
Conduct experiments with 3D cell bioreactors, optimizing culture conditions, enumerating growth kinetics, characterizing and assessing quality metrics using standard operating procedures.
Perform mammalian (primarily human) cell culture and exhibit good aseptic technique.
Isolate and characterize secreted micro vesicles derived from primary cell culture.
Perform and assist with lung scaffold reseeding experiments, including performance of biological assays to evaluate cell distribution and phenotype in engineered tissues.
Perform histological staining of recelled lung tissue (IF & IHC), followed by microscopy imaging and analysis of stained sections.
Perform assays designed to measure vascular permeability (cell junction formation, leakiness, glycocalyx assessment).
Perform cell biological assays (ELISA, histological staining and microscopy analysis, cell culture, cell viability assessment, etc.) for analysis of vascular lung recells.
Analyze cell culture media for presence of key growth factors and metabolites (ELISA, etc.).
Summarize and document data and research findings in laboratory notebook system.
Report and discuss results with mentor. Plan and execute experiments.
For this role you will need
Intern: Rising junior or senior, majoring in Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Advanced Intern: Enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline
Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
The following experiences are a plus and may be required for specific projects:
Knowledge of histological staining (IHC, IF) and microscopy
Experience with cell culture and cell biological assays, with cell bioreactor experience a plus
Experience with data analysis
Good presentation and organization skills
Knowledge of aseptic technique and basic lab skills
Understanding of GraphPad/Prism, ImageJ (FIJI), or MATLAB a plus. Experience with Python a Plus
Self-motivated, curious and hard-working.
Ability to think creatively and learn quickly.
