The Weapons Production directorate (ALDWP) is seeking highly motivated First Line Managers to support important national security missions at LANL, working in the Actinide Material Processing and Power Division (AMPP). Our primary core functions support Space and Defense Power Systems, NASA Space Programs, the Global Security Nuclear non-Proliferation ARIES program, the Defense Strategic Materials Recover & Recycle Program, and Office of Science Americium Oxide Production Program and others.
As a highly skilled first line manager in AMPP Division you will help lead and execute numerous key missions to support our nation’s security and space endeavors as we produce the next generation of nuclear engineers and scientists.
Reporting to your Group Leader, you will provide management and leadership to various teams of 10 to 15 employees, consisting of engineers and technicians. As the First Line Manager, you will have responsibility, authority and accountability to execute work that supports programmatic milestones and deliverables while setting the standards for excellence and operational effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Planning, organizing, and defining strategic objectives.
Establishing scope, schedule, and budget through work package development, resource and performance management and ensuring worker qualification and authorization.
Delivering quality products and/or services; enforcing adherence to quality standards; achieves balance between the need to meet both productivity goals and quality standards.
Ensuring administrative and operating procedures are current, understood, and adhered to before releasing work.
Working with facility operations staff to execute work safely, securely, with quality, and in compliance with nuclear facility requirements.
Ensuring direct daily oversight of work, workers and the work environment.
Serving as the safety responsible line manager over people, equipment, and processes.
Ongoing communications with line management reporting on work status, deliverables and commitments.
Directing and overseeing work performed by employees including “on the floor” supervision.
Mentoring and motivating peers.
Providing financial stewardship over budget, procurement, time and labor, travel, and property.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Experience in managing people and/or projects, including planning, organizing, and resource management, as well as demonstrated experience creating work scope, schedules, budgets, coordinating work activities, and tracking progress.
Demonstrated experience with financial stewardship. Demonstrated experience in identification of resource requirements and development of schedules.
Demonstrated experience in the ability to effectively supervise, negotiate, conduct conflict resolution, mentor, and conduct personnel development.
Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications; effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers. Demonstrated communication of technical issues and solutions to employees, peers and upper management.
Demonstrated experience performing work in a manufacturing environment and executing work in compliance with safety and facility requirements while maintaining a rigorous formality of operations.
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. DOE Order 426.2 requires a Bachelor’s degree and 4 years nuclear experience. Education or experience that is job-related may be substituted for a degree on a case-by-case basis. The degree may fulfill 3 of the 4 years of nuclear experience required on a one-for-one time basis.
Experience with nuclear high hazard facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis and/or Conduct of Operations planning and execution of work.
Diverse Team Experience:
Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team of technicians, engineers, scientists, and professional staff.
Active DOE Q Clearance and HRP Certification highly desirable

This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test:
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
