General Description

Performs engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Duties

The essential duties for this job include:
Engineering Assistant I and II

Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.
Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation related activities.
Assists in creating plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E).
Drives to assist during emergencies and inclement weather.
Assists in performing construction inspections and performing material sampling/testing.
Assists with traffic analysis and data collection.
Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, and evaluation and analysis activities.
Use automated roadway/structural or hydraulic design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

This job requires the following:
Bachelor's Degree in accordance with one of the following other conditions:

OTHER CONDITIONS:
Degree in engineering which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) plus one (1) year engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.
Degree in engineering technology which has been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) plus four (4) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.
Degree in mathematical, physical or engineering science approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers plus four (4) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.
Degree in engineering which has not been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) but has been approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers plus four (4) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

Work Experience

This job requires the following:
Engineering Assistant I:
None

Engineering Assistant II:
One (1) year engineering-related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers ( can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and Certifications are required for this job:

Engineering Assistant I & II:
Engineer-In-Training Certified within one year after date of hire with TxDOT
Safety Impact Certificate*
Valid Driver's License

  • Safety Impact Certification is not required at the time of application. The Safety Impact Certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact certificate will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Required to work weekends and holidays.
