VDOT's Structure and Bridge Division is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to work in the Central Office Structure and Bridge Geotechnical Section. This person will perform a wide variety of geotechnical engineering designs, analyses and reviews as they pertain to the development of bridge, retaining wall and other transportation related plans and specifications for projects throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. This person will interpret AASHTO specifications and FHWA guidelines as part of the work noted above.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of, and experience with, geotechnical engineering principles related to foundation design for bridges and retaining walls. Ability to evaluate the shallow or deep foundation systems for these structures and to perform bearing capacity, settlement and overall stability computations for these systems. Knowledge of earth pressure theory with respect to retaining wall systems. Understanding of various subsurface exploration techniques that are used to develop subsurface profiles. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on most tasks. Able to meet established deadlines. Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, with course work in geotechnical and structural engineering; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree.
Preferred Qualifications Master's Degree in Civil Engineering (concentration in Geotechnical Engineering). Demonstrated ability to work with internal and external customers and to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Experience with the use of geotechnical software (e.g., L-PILE, A-PILE, GRLWEAP, among others) and Microsoft programs. Professional Engineer's (PE) license.
