POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title : CAE Engineer
Reports To : Manager, Mechanical Engineering
Classification : Exempt
Status : Direct /Fulltime
Location : Oakland County, MI
Job Summary:
The CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) Engineer is responsible for the analysis and simulations of FBPS Li-ion battery systems. The CAE Engineer is engaged from the concept stage through production launch and understands the mechanical, electro-mechanical, and functional interfaces throughout the battery. This position is responsible for providing the analysis and simulations of all aspects of design required to meet the high-quality expectations and robustness within the heavy-duty markets supported by FBPS. This position requires an individual with a keen understanding of CAE tools and mechanical engineering to support the design that places safety and quality as foremost deliverables while effectively balancing other attributes such as performance, mass, and cost.
Primary Responsibilities:
Perform CAE analysis and simulations of assigned assemblies, subsystems, and components of battery packs.
Assist with building high-fidelity CAE model from CAD data.
Create analysis reports and communicate analysis status to relevant teams.
Discuss analysis model input, loading, and constraints, as required performance with responsible engineers.
Develop 1D component & system-level thermal simulation models.
Develop CFD simulation models to support the design of battery cells and packs.
Participate in post-test teardowns to correlate CAE results to physical tests.
Support the creation of standard work procedures for delivering quality models and simulation results.
Review results with responsible engineers, and propose design improvements as necessary.
Serve as CAE subject matter expert for project team on new or existing product development.
Analyze design concepts and provide suggestions for design changes based on sound engineering principles, practices, and judgment to meet the objectives.
Where appropriate, conduct DOE studies utilizing optimization tools to meet performance requirements within the constraints of conflicting attributes such as cost and mass.
Work seamlessly with the mechanical engineering and CAD teams to evolve new products efficiently, delivering best-in-class product quality, efficiency, and optimized design solutions.
Additional Support Responsibilities:
Communicate simulation results effectively to design personnel to provide engineering direction on the design at all stages.
Support validation teams in test plan reviews to ensure that testing strategies adequately stress and verify design compliance and safety.
Serve as a peer reviewer for CAE analysis.
Position Qualifications:
B.S. (M.S. preferred) in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology or equivalent
Minimum 5+ years of experience with CAE Analysis in the automotive industry or equivalent; prior battery or HEV CAE experience is highly desired.
5+ years with Ansys CAE (Workbench, Mechanical and Fluent)software experience is desired. Experience with other CAE tools can also be considered.
Familiarity with CAD software, preferably SolidWorks
Experience in analyzing metals and polymers (Stamped or formed sheet metal, injection-molded, insert molded, machined, extruded, die-cast, welding, etc.).
MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape (preferred)
Strong English skills are required, both spoken and written.
Key Competencies:
Ability to perform CAE analysis to evaluate product design at all design levels against the requirements, propose solutions to balance design robustness, mass reduction, and cost:
Static Analysis (linear and non-linear)
Dynamic Analysis (modal, transient, random vibration, response spectrum, and muti-body)
Fatigue Analysis (strain life, weld fatigue, and vibration fatigue)
Implicit/Explicit Analysis
Thermal Analysis
Optimization Analysis (shape, topology, and topography)
CFD – Heat transfer
CFD - Flow
Working knowledge of industry standards for testing: mechanical vibration and shock, thermal profile/shock, environmental exposure, abuse, etc.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – position requires interaction in multi-functional team environment.
