Master's degree in related field, or equivalent training and experience, plus a minimum of 20 years of related and progressively responsible experience.
PhD in a calculus-based Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) preferred.
Prior experience as a designer or principal investigator in the Weapons area of one of National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA’s) National Weapons Laboratory (NWL) preferred.
Demonstrated excellence managing large and diverse teams of scientists, engineers, and R&D programs.
Demonstrated ability to be creative, develop and deliver on objectives based on company strategies
Ability to successfully interact with people throughout the technical and leadership spectrum.
Demonstrated effective technical writing and communication skills.
Experience working with university researchers.
Current Department of Energy Q Clearance preferred
Must be able to gain and maintain DOE Q clearance as well as SCI CI Poly reviewed access
Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Must have a valid driver’s license
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program. Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. We are looking for a visionary Chief Scientist (SC) that will guide our current science and technology efforts as well as our research and development efforts supporting the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) National Security mission. Our SC will wield a wide spread impact on National Security in the areas of Nuclear Stockpile Stewardship, Nuclear/Radiological Response and Counter Terrorism as well as Non-Proliferation. This position will directly report to the Senior Director of Mission Execution and will also serve as a Senior Scientific Advisor to the Mission Support and test Services (MSTS) President.
Lead the development of MSTS vision and strategies for scientific and technological capability development and deployment
Define and drive the enterprise scientific and technological “centers of excellence”
Oversee internal Research & Development (R&D) funding priorities via Site Directed Research and Development
Identify infrastructure and operations priorities
Create and execute specialized talent recruitment, retention, development, and succession efforts supporting the technical workforce
Serve as Lead Mentor for all research and development workforce, post-doctorate employment standards, and educational assistance for advanced degrees in technical fields
Key contributor for technical interchange with peer businesses, and new and existing customers
Lead for university programs, collaboration, and outreach
Innovative problem solver for the application of technical solutions to transient NNSS upsets
Scientific liaison for government and industry customers and stakeholders
