Printpack is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of R&D Process Engineer. This position is located in Williamsburg, VA and will report to the Director, Research & Development. Responsibilitie s include, but are not limited to:
Managing product development/research projects from idea generation to successful commercialization, (typically as technical leader of a team that includes Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, and other functions), and providing oral and written project updates to stakeholders
Providing hands-on support for the development of extrusion processing conditions in support of trials, scale-up, and commercialization of new structures and materials.
Designing specifications to be fit-for-use as well as fit-for-make. Information gathering and problem analysis are critical skills for success.
Leading technical calls/visits to customers, vendors, and external partners to gather information and expedite successful project completion.
Interfacing with equipment suppliers and leading efforts to evaluate and select new equipment
Responding to external and internal technical inquiries in a prompt and professional manner, and demonstrating technical expertise in those interactions. To include assisting manufacturing as needed, in troubleshooting and resolution of difficult problems.
Participating in Printpack’s technology scouting process: vetting scouting ideas, scouting new materials/technologies through desktop research and pilot-scale trials, and communicating results and recommendations to the broader Printpack Technical community.
Four (4) year degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or a closely affiliated degree program.
Travel commitment: 25% (typically within North America, for trials/meetings at customers, vendors, and Printpack plants)
Project management skill, perseverance, and initiative are imperative for success in this role.
Advanced Degree (MS or PhD) with a focus on Polymer Science and/or Polymer Processing is preferred
5 or more years of experience in the packaging industry including processing/manufacturing of PET based products is preferred.
3 or more years of experience in product development, particularly in managing longer-term complex projects with direct customer interaction, is preferred.
