The Senior Process Engineer, Secondary Steelmaking & Ladle Fleet will report General Manager, Steelmaking and will oversee the continuous improvement and optimization of all processes associated with liquid steel quality and refining processes at a twin-station LMF in a Consteel® electric furnace steelmaking operation. The position will also oversee the critical maintenance of the ladle fleet, coordinating the work of contract and internal masonry personnel.
Process Engineering centers on four primary areas within an operating organization; (1) optimization of process and metallurgical parameters, tying together product requirements and the process technical parameters required to achieve key product characteristics, (2) product improvement through advanced problem solving implementation of countermeasures and (3) reducing process variation and improving process and product consistency and (4) works with operations and maintenance to trouble-shoot and engineer solutions for equipment issues that impact integrity of the product.
Maintains daily control and integrity of the product produced at the LMF. Oversees product chemistry disposition based on customer and ASTM grading requirements.
Oversees maintenance of the ladle fleet including reline schedule, inspection, reline quality and close coordination of masonry vendors, ensuring high standards of work integrity.
Establishes standardization of the process through development of Quality Standard Operating Practices.
Subject matter expert of the process and coaches operators and front line supervision on proper practices for the secondary steelmaking process to produce the highest quality product outcome.
Coordinates proper management of slag, stirring practices, alloy addition, yield, hydrogen control and on-chemistry performance for carbon and alloy steel grades in 250 net ton heat sizes.
Participates in the engineering, installation and commissioning of new or upgraded operating equipment and automation
Supports management of plant trials, ensuring proper change point documentation is in place.
Oversees the proper deployment and maintenance of an ISO 9001:2015 QMS and API certification for the secondary steelmaking operating area. Participates in layered process auditing.
Responsible for process measurement and statistical analysis of key process variables. Supports the Operating and Quality organizations in attaining KPIs including cost control and consumable inventory management.
Utilizes automation and advanced measurement techniques to improve analytical capabilities of the operation and facility. Capable of mass scale data analysis and interpretation.
Bachelor's degree in metallurgical or materials engineering preferred (or related field). Substantial relevant experience also considered.
Minimum 5 years of experience in quality management and metallurgical product development and/or process engineering in a steelmaking environment working with ferrous alloys.
Thorough knowledge of steelmaking metallurgy and slag/metal interactions.
