Who we?re looking for
Toyota?s Body Production Engineering Department, Technical Administration Group is looking for a passionate and highly-qualified Welding Engineer for our Joining Innovation Team.
Reporting to the Joining Innovation Manager, the primary responsibilities of this role are to investigate and develop innovative body joining technology, collaborate with R&D on joining feasibility of proposed vehicle designs, and develop technical expertise that helps enhance the global competitiveness of Toyota?s products.
What you?ll be doing
Staying up-to-date on industry best practices and advancements in joining, materials, and quality assurance technologies applicable to automobile body manufacturing.
Identifying promising technologies for investigation based on business merit.
Developing innovation project proposals, securing approvals, assembling cross-functional teams, executing, and reporting progress.
Designing and executing experiments to evaluate joining feasibility and process robustness of materials and material combinations proposed by R&D. This may include evaluation of welded joints, mechanical fastening, structural adhesives, or other methods.
Designing and executing experiments to optimize equipment operating parameters and determine maintenance and quality assurance procedures.
Investigating technologies developed by TMC (Toyota Japan) in preparation for adoption at manufacturing facilities in North America.
Building the capability and productivity of Body PE?s Innovation Lab at the PEMC through best practices and continuous improvement.
Leveraging relationships with universities, research labs, and industry groups to accelerate innovation and stay current.
Authoring standards, policies and procedures, technical memos, and manuals.
Collaborating cross-functionally throughout Toyota?s global operations and external partners to solve problems and accomplish goals.
Showcasing the team?s efforts and accomplishments through presentations to peers and executive management.
Preparing invention disclosures for potentially patentable technologies.
What you bring
Bachelor?s Degree (or higher) in Welding Engineering or closely related field
Background in designing, conducting, and reporting laboratory experiments
Experience with established and/or emerging automobile body joining technologies, e.g. resistance spot, arc, laser, mechanical fastening, and structural adhesives
Willingness/ability to work weekends, holiday periods, and shutdown periods to support tooling modifications and installation projects
Ability to work overtime to achieve targets and complete projects on schedule
Added bonus if you have:
Master?s Degree (or higher) in Welding Engineering or closely related field
Concentration on resistance spot welding
Relevant manufacturing work experience, especially in auto body manufacturing
Command of statistical methods (e.g. ANOVA, correlation & regression, DOE, SQC)
Statistical software (e.g. Minitab, SPSS, Stata) experience
Data analytics software (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau) experience
Experience with robotics and industrial controls (PLC)
