The purpose of this position is to ensure Environmental compliance focusing on environmental programs. Person will be responsible for administering company policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local/state/federal environmental regulations, and industry best practices to ensure compliance across Southern Company Gas (GAS) business units. Provides support in tracking new regulations, updating corporate policies and maintaining the environmental compliance software systems. Primary functions will primarily be responsible for providing consultation, permitting, coordination and support to all of Southern Company Gas’ business units where construction and maintenance activities may affect a variety of environmental resources including freshwater wetlands, streams and associated buffers, salt marshes, federal and state-protected species, migratory birds and other related features. Responsibilities could include wetlands and waters delineation, Corps of Engineers permitting, managing ecological and cultural resource surveys, GIS database preparation and analysis, compliance assistance and training for the requirements of the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and the Georgia Erosion and Sedimentation Control Act. This position will interact daily with internal customers, consultants, regulatory agencies and external stakeholders. Additional environmental compliance functions may include solid and hazardous waste compliance support and/or air compliance.
Provide information, guidance, permitting coordination and cost-effective compliance assistance to Company business units for Clean Water Act Section 404, Erosion and Sedimentation Control Act, State Stream Buffer Variance process and mitigation programs including Georgia and Virginia
Negotiate and resolve natural resource issues with state or federal agencies, including: U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Georgia Department of Natural Resources the Environmental Protection Division, Virginia Department of
Environmental Quality, and the Coastal Resources Division and State Department of Transportation
Provide support in reviewing prospective environmental legislation and regulations in delegated areas and work with company representatives to prepare comments, and support the guiding of development of regulations.
Develop and write procedures and protocols based on environmental regulations that are relevant to Company operations and Business Units.
Provide operational environmental compliance counseling and support (air, water, waste, and land use) for Company operations by serving as a subject matter expert resource for all other departments in the area of environmental compliance.
Inventory, document, and validate environmental aspects of GAS’ operations.
Document and review environmental permits including new applications and permit modifications.
Serve as contact point for any Federal, State or Local regulatory site visits and conduct any necessary follow up.
Provide content for training of employees pertaining to environmental compliance programs and standards, and conduct training in some cases when a subject matter expert is needed.
Evaluate existing environmental compliance program for the applicable regions within control and determine and implement corrections/modifications may be needed.
Counsel and inform business leaders on new or modified environmental regulations and the affects of the regulations on existing company policies and work practices.
Evaluate Environmental incidents and recommend corrective and preventive actions for Environmental incidents (spills, Notice of Violation occurrences, etc)
Occasionally represent the corporation at applicable association meetings on various Environmental topics.
Documents and evaluates environmental metrics.
Formulate and recommend the annual operating and capital budgets and track the budgets according to plan.
Maintain and retain compliance documentation as required by EPA and other applicable regulatory agencies.
Inform organization and regulatory agencies as needed of potential compliance violations or emergency actions.
Provide statistics and best practices data to internal and external groups (e.g., American Gas Association (AGA)).
Determine Environmental best practices to support the company’s goals by consulting with company representatives (internal peers and other key business units) and external sources such as AGA and peer companies.
Collaborate with business units to achieve shared results.
Support Corporate Sustainability efforts as assigned.
Demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills at all levels within the Company necessary to guide business units and individuals with respect to Environmental issues.
Negotiating and procuring Federal, State and Local environmental permits, authorizations, approvals necessary to Company’s operations.
Advocate Company’s position regarding environmental legislative and regulatory developments in conjunction with internal government relations personnel and industry lobbying groups.
Educate Company personnel to facilitate environmental compliance.
Manage environmental consultants/contractors for as needed environmental support.
Partner with other key business units to ensure that needed compliance data and information is obtained in a timely manner.
Motivate and encourage a culture of compliance by facilitating focus group exercises (e.g., environmental awareness).
Support the development, implementation, and administration of compliance programs (e.g. GHG, air, water, SARA, USTs, ASTs, stormwater, waste compliance programs); lead environmental programs and support projects by developing metrics and compliance processes.
Assess and audit facilities and operations for environmental aspects, including the preparation and updating of assessment protocols.
Ensure Company operations achieve and maintain compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations and existing environmental permits.
Takes personal responsibility to ensure that compliance is achieved with high quality and efficiently.
Monitor environmental compliance, evaluate trends and provide reports to business units and regulatory agencies as required.
Make good business decisions in a timely manner.
Ensure that all projects have awareness of potential environmental impacts and requirements at onset of planning process.
Develop and maintain Environmental related corporate programs, policies, and manuals to assure compliance based on new or existing environmental regulations.
Ensure corporate policies and compliance software are updated as regulations and company environmental aspects change to assure continued compliance.
BA/BS in Engineering (Environmental, Civil, or similar), Geology, or Environmental Science, Biological Science, or other natural science discipline
MS in Engineering (Environmental, Civil, or similar), Geology, or Environmental Science, or other natural science discipline
Professional Engineer (PE); Professional Geologist (PG); or Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) certifications
Related Work Experience:
Minimum of 7-10 years experience in environmental compliance (air, water and waste), environmental liability management, and project management
Experience in wetland and waters delineation;
Experience in Clean Water Act Section 404 permitting and the Endangered Species Act;
Permitting and compliance in linear and stand-alone construction activities;
Environmental regulation interpretation and developing appropriate corporate environmental policies
Environmental Auditing experience
Familiarity with ISO 14001
Use and configuration of Environmental Information Management Systems or other compliance software
Experience managing large complex projects with significant environmental implications
Experience with environmental sustainability programs
Specific Skills & Knowledge:
Working knowledge of applicable Federal and State environmental laws and regulations and ability to develop corporate policies
Ability to manage multiple projects with limited supervision
Ability to understand and analyze legislation and regulation and translate into corporate summaries and policy as needed

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Travel requirements: Occasional (5-20% travel) to Regular (20-50% travel) Traveler: The incumbent may be required to travel on a regular basis. Trips will likely require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
On-call duties: While not officially on call, must be able to respond to urgent Environmental issues when contacted on mobile communication device as issues arise.
Physical demands: Prolonged Standing or Walking: This position frequently requires prolonged standing or walking, ability to lift minimum 20 pounds
Work environment: The incumbent works in an office environment and may be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions when working with field operations, conducting facility inspections, facilitating assessments, etc.
