The Blue Buffalo R&D Scientist/Engineer II role reports to the Director, Research & Development and will be responsible for the execution of formula design projects for dog and cat treats (biscuits, semi-moist, jerky, etc.), as well as ensuring that all nutritional and performance requirements are achieved. This includes all new dry and semi-moist treat product formula and manufacturing process design, renovation/optimization, and continuous improvement projects, plus enhancing the palatability and functionality of all existing treats and forms (injection molding, extrusion, co-extrusion, cold-pressed, dehydration).
Travel for this position is estimated to be 40%+ of time for factory test runs, plant commissioning, and team meetings in locations such as Wilton, CT or Joplin, MO.

Develop, manage and execute all product development projects for dog and cat treats (biscuits, semi-moist, jerky, etc.) ensuring nutrition and performance requirements

Provide all processing specifications and necessary support to operations to ensure products are proven for ongoing commercial production
Lead and support supplier and manufacturing line trials and experiments for product development and HMM
Establishing and maintaining raw ingredients specifications to meet the company’s strict food safety requirements.
Review product claims with marketing, legal and regulatory to ensure necessary documentation is maintained for substantiation of product label compliance standards, feeding guidelines, statements of nutritional adequacy, and advertising or promotional claims (feeding test, shelf life, microbial challenge test, etc.)
Work collaboratively with Blue Buffalo/General Mills supply chain, quality, marketing, external co-manufacturers and ingredient suppliers
Present detailed analysis of project updates, risks and opportunities on an as needed basis
Identify and evaluate new technologies that enhance current products and/or create best in class new products
Conduct efficacy research on new technologies under evaluation
Present technical data to external scientific, veterinary and business audiences
Develop, maintain, and analyze competitive feeding data
Provide formula product support and troubleshooting for other teams (operations, marketing, sales, etc.) as requested
Identify intellectual property opportunities (trade secrets or patents) to give the company a competitive advantage.

Bachelor’s in animal nutrition, food science, food technology, chemical/food engineering or a related field
Minimum 3+ years full time CPG work experience required
Expertise in formula design, stability studies, palatability studies, and the establishment of ingredient and finished product specifications
Proficient in Concept-5 and Multi Step formulation software (PLM)
Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and operations, including different packaging forms, etc.
Hands on experience in working with external partners including 3rd party co-manufacturers, suppliers, associations, etc.
Experience with pilot plant trials and ability to handle multiple priorities and work independently
Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal/ written communication
Master’s in animal nutrition, food science, food technology, food engineering or a related field
7+ years preferred
Processing experience with injection molding, extrusion, co-extrusion, cold-pressed, dehydration
Statistical Process Control (SPC) knowledge along with use of Statistical Tools is desirable.
