Translational NeuroEngineering Laboratory – Research Engineer
The Translational Neural Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry is seeking a dedicated, self-motivated Research Engineer interested in working at the intersection of technology, neuroscience, and mental health. Our laboratory has multiple projects ongoing involving electrical recording, optical and electrical brain stimulation, and real-time signal processing in actively behaving animals (sometimes called "brain-computer interfaces"). The technologies we develop will ultimately be used to change activity in specific brain circuits involved in severe mental illnesses such as PTSD, major depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. This specific position is seeking an engineering-focused candidate to assist with the characterization of new electronic and software systems for real-time control of brain activity. Our existing setups, written in a variety of languages, read out emotion-related activity from the brain and control stimulators that respond within milliseconds to activity changes. We are now working to build hardware/electronic versions of these, in collaboration with electrical engineering colleagues. Your role would be to characterize the resulting circuits, both on the benchtop and in experiments with laboratory animals (mainly rats).

You will carry out those duties at least in part by supervising and teaching junior lab personnel (undergraduate volunteers and/or Researchers at lower ranks).
Key skills are a working knowledge of digital electronics and strong abilities with at least one major compiled (C/C++ and variants preferred) and one major interpreted (MATLAB/Python preferred, R welcome) computer language. This can arise from coursework, independent study, or practical experience. Familiarity with common digital processing techniques (filtering and frequency-domain transforms) and with digital or analog electronics would be very useful. Many of our code bases are ultimately integrated into open source projects, and thus a familiarity with code management tools (particularly GitHub) is desirable.
We are committed to developing the careers of all our technicians. There will be frequent opportunities for interaction with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty who work in both clinical care and basic research. This includes clinical shadowing opportunities with psychologists and physicians from several specialties. There are regular lab meetings and other opportunities to present and learn about research findings. This specific position could be a springboard to graduate or professional school, a road to a long-term career as professional research staff, or to a role in the medical device industry. There is no required major or field of undergraduate study, and we fully welcome applications from candidates who have not worked in the life sciences before, but who would like to apply their technical skills in the fast-growing and exciting world of neurotechnology.
