Modern Electron has an immediate opening for a physical chemist, materials/process engineer, or surface scientist. An experienced R&D engineer is needed to work on the product development team, and will be responsible for innovation, development, and production of next-generation energy conversion devices using the company’s groundbreaking technology and processes. Particular focus will be experimental design, hands-on building and experimentation, optimizing materials and processes, and implementing lab-scale results in prototypes and products. You will work closely with a team of physicists, chemists, material scientists, electrical engineers, and technicians. The ideal candidate will operate with a high degree of independence, including developing and leading experiments and contributing to successful product development.

DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Expertise in the principles of vacuum science (e.g. kinetic theory of gases, vapor-surface interaction, etc.), surface chemistry, and surface kinetics
Hands-on experience with design, purchase, assembly, integration, and operation of high vacuum or ultra-high vacuum equipment and/or vapor-phase reactors, improvements/maintenance of these systems, and surface chemistry/characterization techniques
Experience with high throughput, statistical experimentation design and analysis (e.g. Design of Experiments, Robust Engineering/Taguchi methods, etc.)
Automation of lab processes and equipment and comfort with basics of programming (python preferred) and laboratory electronics and measurement systems
Experience working on process or product development in a commercial/industrial setting
B.S. in Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, applied physics, physics, or related field
Demonstrated experience with experimental physics or chemistry using vacuum systems and statistical experimentation
Minimum 5 years of prior commercial/industrial experience
Strong team player with impeccable communication skills
PhD in Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, applied physics, or related field
Experience in a startup company
Hands-on experience with vacuum electronics and/or low work function materials
Experience with mechanical 3D part design/CAD (e.g. Solidworks)
