Fast-paced, early-stage industrial biotech company is seeking an Environmental Controls Engineer with exceptional programming, controls, and data architecture skills across both large and small prototype systems to join our team.
Seeking candidates for either full time or 6 month contract opportunities.
Ideal candidates will own the programming of control systems for a variety of pieces of custom equipment most importantly custom incubation systems. They will be comfortable with multiple control languages and systems and with quickly learning new systems as needed. They will design systems for future scaling and to support data capture and analysis. They will also coordinate with external equipment and controls suppliers when appropriate for larger projects.
THIS ROLE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Writing PLC or embedded controller code for a variety of custom pieces of equipment.
Writing HMI code or program web-server based interfaces for a variety of custom pieces of equipment.
Interfacing closely with Research Scientists and R&D Operators to understand what data will be used and how to most effectively capture and present data for the team, as well as how equipment will be operated and how to best program for ease of use.
Interfacing closely with other Engineers to understand how the control systems will interface with the physical equipment, understand the current use cases, and also design systems in anticipation of future needs.
Owning the overarching data-architecture for Ecovative’s equipment network and data logging, including implementing standards and best practices for data capture, equipment logs, automated reports and calculations, and more.
Minimum Qualifications and Competencies:
Excellent understanding of industrial controls and sensors.
PLC, HMI, and microcontroller programming exposure.
Experience with environmental control (greenhouse, incubator, aquaculture etc…)
Excellent communication skills, comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment and on research / prototypical equipment.
Equally comfortable either rigging up a quick trial control system using off-the shelf and on-hand components or designing, specifying, and quoting a large instrumentation build.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies:
Bachelors in Controls Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering, or 2-year technical degree with 5+ years working in a technical field.
Controls cabinet design, schematic drawings, and industrial wiring experience.
Relevant (3+ years) experience in designing industrial controls programs and HMIs.
Experience in incubator controls in a research environment, including experience with detailed condition controls, monitoring, and data-logging.
Up to date on the latest controls options beyond traditional industrial componentry, such as arduinos, custom machine-api interfaces, and setting up bots to increase company accessibility to machine data.
SCADA experience and data architecture skills.
Capable of programming custom scripts in R, Python, or other languages.
Up to date on trends in big data capture and analysis, especially as applied to biological research operations.
