The Deckhand/Crane Operator shall be responsible for the operation and minor maintenance of the crane machinery and systems throughout the tour of duty as well as maintaining the cleanliness of all crane machinery. During his tour of duty s/he will be called upon to perform deck duties under the guidance of the Chief Mate and engine room duties under the guidance of the Chief Engineer. As a crew member aboard the vessel, the Deckhand/Crane Operator performs other duties as assigned by the vessel Master, including sanitary assignments.
This position will be responsible to safely operate and perform basic maintenance on a Manitowoc 4000 or 4100 Series VICON crane aboard the barge. This position will also handle tug & barge lines, tug towing gear (e. g. shackles, wire rope, chain, etc.,), paint removal devices (e. g. grinders, needle guns, sanders, etc., ) handling container tag lines during cargo operations, and other machinery and equipment as necessary in a tow boat environment. Knowledge of the operation of Fire Extinguishers and Fire Equipment is necessary.
Assist in all cargo handling operations.
May assist the Captain, Chief Mate, Chief Engineer, Deckhand/Cook, Deckhand/Engineer or other crew members as directed.
Valid Merchant Mariner Credential with a minimum of an Ordinary Seaman endorsement required.
Valid TWIC or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
Must be able to lift or pull ship assist lines, tug lines, barge lines, towing gear such as shackles, chain, wire rope, etc.
Must be able to lift 75 pounds unassisted and carry up to 150 feet.
Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up or down gangplank, Jacob's ladder, dock ladder, or vessel ladder.
Must also be capable of boarding and entering a skiff from a dock or a boat unassisted in all weather conditions.
Ability to live in confined spaces and get along with crewmembers for extended periods of time.
Must be capable of following specific written, oral, and visual directions in the event of an emergency.
Must be able to walk to designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life vest, jacket and/or survival suit, hard hat, noise suppression devices, safety goggles, gloves, and heavy weather boots without assistance.
Must be able to share room assignments and bathroom facilities and eat in a common dining area with other crew.
Must be capable of using an upper bunk without the aid of a ladder.
Must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions and at temperatures ranging from normal or room temperature to 30 degrees below zero.
Job Condition and Environment
Must be able to perform the functions set forth in the attached job analysis and physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges and up and down ladders, and bending and twisting during boat/barge tie up.
Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
Must not be afraid of heights.
Expected Hours of Work
12 daily, as necessary for the duration of the tour of duty. During cargo operations the crane operator will work only for 12 hours and then be relieved for a rest period.
Erratic sleep patterns may be worked.
