WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate or Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing multidiscipline Building Sciences Team, located at our Winnipeg office. This team is part of our Canada-wide Building Sciences practice with over 200 team members working in an integrated practice from coast to coast.

Building Science encompasses a broad range of scientific and practical knowledge on the design, performance, construction, rehabilitation, maintenance and operation of new and existing buildings.

With buildings being one of the major contributors of greenhouse gases to the environment, working to improve the design and operation of buildings has a positive impact on our environment and our daily lives, especially as most of us live, work and play in a wide range of building types.

Building Sciences deals with key aspects of the building envelope including cladding systems, insulation, air and vapour control, windows and doors, roofing and related systems, and parkade waterproofing to name a few.

Our Building Sciences Mechanical and Electrical practice deals with many mechanical and electrical systems in existing buildings including assessments and reporting, upgrading of existing systems, design of new systems, re-commissioning of existing systems and commissioning of new systems. It also deals with the design of systems for new buildings and facilities.

WSP Building Sciences has a comprehensive Centres of Excellence (COE) program developing best practices and providing training and mentoring to all our staff. You will have the opportunity to participate in this program as a member of our Building Sciences team.

Our Building Science team in Winnipeg works as part of an integrated team that also includes project managers, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil specialists that work on a wide array of projects across Western Canada and the North.

In our Winnipeg office, we provide Building Sciences services that include:

Design and commissioning of new building envelope systems and components
Design and commissioning of new building mechanical and electrical systems;
Upgrading and recommissioning of existing building mechanical and electrical systems;
Building Condition Assessments for existing buildings, building envelopes, parkades and sites including mechanical and electrical systems;
Reserve Fund Studies for condominiums;
Design of remediation and rehabilitation projects for buildings and building systems of all types; and
Tender and construction period engineering services to support our design projects.

These positions may also have the opportunity to work on projects in other provinces both from the Winnipeg office and in the field.

We also provide prime consulting services on a wide range of other building and development projects that provide opportunities to be involved in commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects for a wide range of clients.

Reporting to the Manager, Electrical-Mechanical, this position will provide technical leadership on a wide variety of projects and will work closely with our Mechanical and Electrical Team members, Building Sciences Engineers and our Building Science Consultants.

A day in the life:
Provide senior consulting engineering knowledge to tasks on mechanical design & assessment projects;
Take professional responsibility for your projects;
Lead mechanical design projects and project teams;
Lead and/or assist with building condition assessments, evaluations, audits, designs & site reports;
Design of HVAC systems;
Design of plumbing and fire-protection systems;
Design of specialized piping systems, such as those for laboratory gases, and waste liquids;
Analysis of the building’s heating, ventilation, and cooling loads;
Perform engineering calculations;
Supervise staff conducting construction period site reviews monitoring quality of mechanical construction and repairs;
Liaise with contractors, sub-consultants and engineering disciplines;
Contribute to the contract administration process on projects;
Accept responsibility for project tasks, deliverables and outcomes;
Apply sustainable thinking and practices within project delivery; and
Contribute to the knowledge systems within the building science mechanical practice.

This position may fit the education and experience of a wide range of candidates. Preferred qualifications include combinations of the following:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering;
A minimum of 10 years (intermediate) or 15 years (senior) recent experience in consulting engineering or industry design experience where you personally provided detailed design and professional responsibility for mechanical systems is mandatory;
Experience with Building Condition Assessment and Reserve Fund Study reporting is an asset but not a requirement;
Candidates will be currently registered with Engineers & Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM) as a P. Eng. (or eligible to register immediately), registration in other Provinces is an asset;
Demonstrates a passion for building mechanical system design and construction;
Exceptional time-management and organizational skills; attention to detail and strong work ethic;
Strong oral and written communication skills including presentation skills;
Knowledge of mechanical systems and construction processes for new and existing systems;
Working knowledge of Canada and Manitoba Building Codes, CSA standards, and ASHRAE standards;
Knowledge and skills using AutoCAD and/or Revit is advantageous;
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
A team player with an entrepreneurial attitude and a desire to work with successful, energetic people;
Strong at multi-tasking, organized and able to adapt to shifting priorities;
Ability to travel to project sites within western Canada and the North and to work extended and various hours when required;
The ability to work at heights (suitable training will be provided);
Acceptance and cooperation to work in a respectful workplace environment;
Experience and training in Workplace Health and Safety protocol and experience in reading and following Safe Work Practices and Procedures is an asset; and
Valid driver's license in good standing. (Abstract may be requested)
