KBR is helping our customer to build and staff a Center of Excellence for remotely sensed data quality. This work will be located at the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Building on over 47 years of operating the Landsat series of satellites, the EROS Calibration and Validation Center of Excellence (ECCOE) will work with all types of land remote sensing sensors and platforms, bringing the expertise of our team to the challenges of maintaining the superb calibration of the satellites and sensors operated by our customer as well as other sensors nationally and internationally. The team will work to assess the characteristics and utility of data from multiple satellites and airborne platforms and work to develop methods and tools that enhance the interoperability of data from a wide variety of sources. Job Description:
We are looking for a mid- to senior-level Image Scientist/Engineer with experience in measuring and improving the accuracy of remote sensing imagery to work within the ECCOE team to assess the performance of remote sensing systems, including processed higher-level products. This work will span the spectrum from ultraviolet to thermal infrared. This work will include developing and executing methods for validation and monitoring of the above. This position will support the EROS Calibration and Validation Center of Excellence (ECCOE).

Education: Minimum of a Master of Science Degree in Engineering, Physics, Earth Science, or fields related to remote sensing systems required. A Doctorate/PhD is a strong plus.

Experience: Five or more years working with multispectral and hyperspectral remotely sensed data.

Developing test methods for validating, comparing, and monitoring performance of remote sensing systems.
Develop and refine methods for the characterizing and improving the quality of data in the EROS archives.
Develop and execute methods for the assessing and monitoring the ongoing performance of EROS-developed products, including surface reflectance, surface temperature, and higher-level products.
Communicate well within the ECCOE Team, as well as with outside agencies, universities, and companies, nationally and internationally
Reporting as required, including at regular meetings with ECCOE Project Management as well as producing peer-reviewed publications.

Desired Skills:
Educational background and experience in principles of remote sensing, including characterizing the radiometric, geometric, and spatial performance of airborne or satellite imagery
Experience with multi-sensor data fusion, including geometric co-registration, pan-sharpening, terrain correction (topographic normalization)
BRDF correction (NBAR), classification
Understanding of automated cloud detection methods
Experience in ground truth reflectance measurements using spectrometer, BRDF goniometer
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Skill in Matlab, IDL, Python, C, or C++.
Ability to think independently.
Ability to work within a team and mentor others.
Ability to handle complex multitask environments.

Special Requirements:
Some travel required (4-6 times per year)
The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
Must be legally able to work in the United States. US Citizenship is not required but is a strong plus.
