Job Description: The successful candidate will develop technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems related to the design, integration, and testing of components and sub-systems for directed energy systems. The candidate will work under limited to no supervision while devising and developing solutions to meet overall system design and program objectives. This position requires frequent interaction and coordination with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, other scientists, customers, and a wide variety of support staff. The ideal candidate is expected to provide significant modeling, simulation and analysis (MS&A) support for concept generation, design development, testability of prototypes, and support the integration of subsystems into larger directed energy systems.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Physics based simulation, design, and analysis of directed energy concepts, components, sub-systems, and systems.
Development of models to predict and analyze system performance and for comparison with theoretical predictions.
Work within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, scientists, technicians, and support staff in the following technical areas:
Coordinate with physicists and engineers to determine sub-system and system mechanical requirements
Coordinate with support staff to manage procurement, security, and safety requirements
Coordinate with mechanical engineers to develop and review component and system designs and their interface with other mechanical systems
Support and participate in team meetings, design reviews, engineering review boards, and configuration control boards
Coordinate with team leadership (program management, chief engineer, sub-team leads) to develop project costs and schedules and to assess technical risks and opportunities
Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or Mathematics. Advanced degree's preferred.
Ten years of prior experience relevant to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position.
Six years of experience in physics-based modeling, simulation, and analysis of conceptual and prototype systems.
Five years of experience with particle-in-cell simulation codes.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Active DoD SECRET or equivalent security clearance.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Top Secret (TS) security clearance.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.
Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or Mathematics.
Six or more years of direct experience with directed energy systems (theory and experimentation).
Seven or more years of experience in physics-based modeling, simulation, and analysis of conceptual and prototype systems.
Six or more years of experience with particle-in-cell simulation codes.
Experience with particle-in-cell code development and applications.
Experience with CHICAGO or ICEPIC particle-in-cell simulation codes.
Experience with one or more of the following programming languages or software packages: C, C+, C++, Python, or MatLab.
Specific experience in one or more of the following: radiofrequency systems and instrumentation, high power microwave systems, pulsed power, data acquisition and analysis, and radiation environments.
Ability to work independently and be a self-starter.
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting.
Strong written and oral communication skills
Experience presenting work products and work progress to customers and stakeholders.
Active DoD Top Secret (TS) security clearance.
