The Leidos Research Support Team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory is seeking Research Scientists and Engineers to join our Workforce Development Team. This program is designed to identify recent master’s and doctoral graduates to be part of cutting-edge energy research of importance to the county helping provide answers to today’s pressing scientific questions. This opportunity will allow side by side execution of research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment to contribute to new areas of basic and applied research.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary, scientific and technical-oriented national laboratory. NETL produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges. From developing creative innovations and efficient energy systems that make coal more competitive, to advancing technologies that enhance oil and natural gas extraction and transmission processes, NETL research is providing breakthroughs and discoveries that support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled men and women at three NETL research sites – Albany, Ore., Morgantown, W.Va., and Pittsburgh, Pa. – conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.
Selected candidates will be responsible for researching, developing theories, and devising methods to apply to the field of energy sciences. Duties may include planning and executing laboratory research, maintaining substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and contributing to scientific literature and conferences in the following Core Competencies:
Geological and Environmental Sciences (GES). An internationally recognized capability to monitor, analyze, and predict the physical, chemical, and biological structure and function of complex subsurface environments, from the field-scale down to the molecular level, specifically with the goal of serving as a leader in monitoring and control in real time. Leveraging expertise in geomaterials science, fluid flow in geologic media, multi-scale assessments, geospatial data management & analyses, and field monitoring, GES will enable the beneficial, efficient, and environmentally sustainable engineering of geo-based energy production.
Materials Engineering and Manufacturing (MEM). Enabling fossil energy systems’ advancement by developing cost effective functional and structural materials that can withstand the extreme service environments associated with clean and efficient fossil energy conversion and resource recovery. Active and passive materials are pursued, as are systems incorporating the developed materials. The MEM accelerates the materials development using integrated computational, experimental, and analytical approaches.
Energy Conversion Engineering. The complete support and foundational functionality through: (1): Reactor Modeling; (2) Chemical Reaction & Separation Science; (3) Thermal Power; (4) Electrochemical and Electromagnetic Direct Power. Strategic innovation capability in the areas of direct power extraction/injection, oxy-combustion and super critical CO2 technology will be pursued. In addition, opportunity to maximize facilities to encourage on-site collaboration in those as well as enabling technology approaches such as cyber-physical R&D will be pursued.
Systems Engineering & Analysis. The premier resource for the development and analysis of innovative advanced energy systems and to provide unprecedented breadth of integrated modeling and optimization capability to support decision making and analysis across multiple scales. This competency will support technology innovation and maturation at the process level as well as enable better identification, evaluation and prioritization of R&D concepts at earlier stages, including the consideration of broader energy system and market needs and impacts.
Computational Science & Engineering. Provide cutting-edge computational infrastructure, code development, communications, and data management approaches that will accelerate the discovery, development and deployment of fossil energy technology solutions. Of specific interest is high performance/speed computing, data science, and research in cyber security.
Typical Responsibilities could include:
Meeting task requirements of NETL and Leidos research managers in attaining goals established for the NETL team and RIC programs as delineated in the statements of work pertaining to funding awards supporting this position.
Provide R&D technical support for the NETL team.
Active participation in group meetings as well as other task related meetings.
Analyzing results in relation to experimental data from laboratory tests and published data from other authors.
Assisting in the preparation of technical papers, reports, conference papers, and annual and quarterly reports.
Presenting the results of the research at technical conferences and publishing in archival journals.
Developing and applying modeling
Developing and testing new models
Developing boundary conditions and numerical approaches.
Developing models utilizing both commercial and non-commercial codes as well as in house codes.
Presenting technical findings during regular team meetings as well as at workshops and professional conferences.
Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering (e.g., chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical, safety, software), or related scientific/engineering field. Within two years of graduation with an overall minimum GPA of 2.5.
Master’s Degree in science or engineering (e.g., chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical, safety, software), or related scientific/engineering field. Within two years of graduation with an overall minimum GPA of 2.5.
PhD in science or engineering (e.g., chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial, mechanical, safety, software), or related scientific/engineering field. Within two years of graduation with an overall minimum GPA of 2.5.
Basic knowledge of and ability to apply principles, theories, and concepts of narrow technical domain in engineering or related scientific/engineering field.
Ability to address and solve technical problems following established procedures and policies and through technical direction from more senior, experienced peers.
Ability to contribute to research and development of products, solutions, processes using basic principles, theories and concepts within own technical specialty.
Ability to communicate with peers verbally and in writing to explain facts, basic analysis, processes and practices related to area.
TERM OF COMMITMENT: These research positions are intended to be term positions, with varying levels of commitment that are not expected to last longer than 2 years. Candidates will be informed prior to applying what length of commitment is anticipated. Also, candidates who successfully fill a term position, may be invited to apply for an additional terms.
