POSITION SUMMARY

The Drafting Specialist is responsible for producing custom roof- and ground-mounted solar electric designs for residential and commercial projects ranging from 2kW to 2MW, as well as occasional designs for solar hot water and solar pool heating. They work under the direction of the Permit Manager to meet AHJ requirements. As a key member of the Operations team, the ideal candidate is knowledgeable in the solar energy industry, detail-oriented, organized, with a strong work ethic and excellent teamwork. The Drafting Specialist reports to the Permit Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates system drawings for each project, including but not limited to single- and three-line electrical diagrams, scaled roof layouts, structural details, code analyses, plats, construction documents, and as-built drawings
  • Identifies and obtains necessary information for proper design by requesting measurements and extrapolating details from photographs, GIS tools, and satellite imagery
  • Provides documents within a deadline
  • Works closely with Permit Manager to compile required drawings
  • Works with structural & electrical engineers on system drawings needing stamped approval
  • Builds templates for distinct AHJ permit application packages to streamline application process
  • Provides pre-sale drafting support for the Sales team as needed
  • Attends and contributes to weekly Operations team production meetings

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, design, or other related field; or equivalent professional training or experience
  • 3-5 years’ work experience in solar or electrical design
  • Working knowledge of grid-tied PV systems (mandatory)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current electrical & structural code requirements including but not limited to NEC, IFC, IRC, IBC
  • Proficiency with computers, skills in drafting software such as Sketchup or AutoCAD, and competency in Microsoft Suite. Skills in performance modeling software such as PVSyst is preferred
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of solar components (modules, inverters, optimizers, etc.)
  • Ability to learn new programs quickly
  • Basic construction knowledge preferred
  • NABCEP PVIP or PVDS certification preferred
  • Strong math and analytical skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills
  • Honest and trustworthy, showing high integrity

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • No travel
  • Occasional requirement to stand; walk; sit; reach with arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must be able to work in front of a computer for most of the day
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. may be required

  • Compensation commensurate with experience $38k-54K/year
