The cross-SBU polyurea platform drives new polyurea product development and supports to grow existing product lines across automotive, industrial, refinish, protective and marine coatings and architectural finish businesses.
Business Objective: Grow PPG Polyurea business by extending polyurea offering into existing and emerging market across multiple SBU’s.
Technical Objective: Leverage and extend PPG’s existing resin synthesis, formulation knowledge and capabilities, application expertise, analytical capabilities, and fundamental material property knowledge to support growth in extended and emerging applications. Position PPG as a company with expertise and leadership relative to polyurea science, materials and applications.
PPG is seeking a self-motivated chemist to plan and conduct projects independently and as part of a team to develop innovative profitable new polyurea products and support to grow existing line of polyurea products.
New product development, maintenance of existing products, and other business support activities related to polyurea technology.
Follow procedures and obtain quality results in a timely manner. Communicates with team members across different functions (technical, sales, commercial, plants etc.) on experiments and testing outcome and observations.
Lead independent projects and/or portion of larger projects.
Ensure compliance with all PPG policies and business strategies including EH&S, business conduct, code of ethics, and all governmental regulations and laws.
Perform a variety of routine and non-routine functions directed toward formulation of new and existing coatings related to polyurea chemistry. The functions include mixing and applying (dispensing, spraying) of paint and the testing of resulting coatings which require handling hazardous chemicals, careful weighing and mixing of paints, using spray equipments designed for plural components and pneumatic hand-held spray, performing property measurements of wet and dry coatings, gathering data and recording detailed account of results in electronic laboratory notebook.
Contribute to the development of the project plan through design of experiments, writing of logs independently, evaluating data and interpreting results.
Scale up of paints in laboratory environment (typical batch size range from 1 gallon or less to 20 gal maximum) using mill (e.g., Eiger mill) and dispersion equipments.
Work safely with hazardous materials on a daily basis, follow rigorous safety precautions and wear personal protective equipments including use of respirator.
Performs independently in lab experiments and scale-ups. Help application when necessary.
Skilled ability to solve problems and identify root cause(s) using business process improvement tools.
Understand polyurea chemistry and application theory.
Prioritize daily tasks to maximize productivity.
Learns and demonstrates use of terminology, operating procedures, and equipment pertaining to individual project.
Develop understanding of fundamental principles related to structure-property relationship and root cause analysis to design effective experiments.
Conduct test drills.
Conduct innovative work with the potential of PPG IP generation (Patents, trade secret etc.).
Demonstrates ability to influence and motivate associates. Trains technician in daily activities including on-boarding of new hires.

Experience and Education:
The candidate must have a BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline with 1+ year of coatings formulating experience.
Demonstrated basic technical writing skills.
Ability to effectively listen, communicate and carry out instructions in a timely manner.
Open minded and responsive to feedback.
The ideal candidate recommended to have special knowledge and skills related to polyurea coatings formulations and applications.
