Maintenance position with dedicated responsibility of protecting pipelines from external damage. Reads and interprets computer generated “one-call” notices, maps, and drawings. Operates pipeline locators and marks location of pipelines. Works with company and contractors to insure pipeline is not damaged during construction around pipeline. Works closely with third party
contractors and company representatives. Interfaces with landowners and regulatory agencies in relation to pipeline ROW issues. Understands operation of various types of equipment and machinery performing maintenance, excavation and related work at pipeline locations. Will be subject to call outs for emergency one-calls and/or work associated with Plains field operations. Normally reports to Maintenance Supervisor.
Job Specifications:Knowledge, Skills, Education and Experience:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with strong communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to perform basic math. Must be able to read and comprehend technical operational manuals and drawings.
Certifications and Training:
Must be able to successfully complete company Haz-Mat training and required D.O.T. operator qualification tasks and mandatory safety training.
Complete required Computer Based Training.
Must have a valid driver's license
Special Equipment and Tools Used Requiring Application Knowledge: Understand one-call notices. Must be able to read/use pipeline maps and drawings to locate pipelines.
Have knowledge of and be able to use the following equipment:
Personal Computers to update documents, records and reports
Manual spotting bars and electronic line locaters
Four gas meter
Multi-meter functions with ability to take ground potentials from ETS points
Must have the ability to identify different coatings on pipelines.
Have complete understanding of alignment sheets. Be able to identify a set of pipelines and complete associated paper work including DOT mandated bimonthly line rides.
Interface with Others:
Must have the ability to interface with individuals inside and outside the company, i.e. other company representatives, public officials, regulators, engineers, business professionals, contractors, landowners, and others.
Understanding and ability to interface with the Houston One Call office to maintain software used for Line locator operations.
Occasionally lifts or carries moderately heavy equipment or parts and positions them during maintenance activities. Uses manual spotting bar to locate pipelines. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Physical requirement may include stooping, kneeling, bending, and walking distances in all types of terrain.
Works outdoors in open environment with extremes of heat and cold.
1. Pipeline Protection
Receive and evaluate one-calls for impact on company assets.
Detect location of work effecting pipeline and mark/flag. Locates and marks pipelines manually or with line locators to protect pipeline from external damage.
Work with appropriate individuals involved with pipeline encroachment activity.
Monitor activity over/around pipeline to insure pipeline is not damaged.
Update drawings and document activity on appropriate forms/reports.
Notify appropriate company and outside individuals.
2. Pipeline Maintenance
Install pipeline marker poles as required. Paint
pipeline markers as required. Notify appropriate company personnel of pipeline and/or right-of-way condition. Read rectifiers.
3. Maintenance Support
Performs routine scheduled and non-scheduled equipment maintenance. Performs basic maintenance functions as needed.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to painting, weed control and general housekeeping. Assists in construction and special projects where requested. Responds to internal and external operational needs as well as Line Locator issues.
