As part of HMS Research Computing, the Research Information Technology Solutions (RITS) team works collaboratively with researchers at HMS to identify, design, and deliver a wide range of technological solutions at the ever-changing forefront of biomedical research.
RITS is seeking a talented engineer focused on Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN) to work directly with Harvard Medical School’s Research and IT communities to identify and pilot an ELN solution to support diverse and state of the art research workflows. By coordinating a strategic engagement of multiple customers and IT service groups, he/she/they will be responsible for product selection, evaluation and technical implementation of an ELN pilot service selecting from a wide variety of available ELN platforms, both on-premise and in the cloud. As the RITS ELN Systems Engineer, he/she/they will be expected to engage with researchers, IT Staff and department leaders and understand their business needs and assess application portfolios, design reliable and cost-effective solutions, and create implementation/migration plans backed by business cases to justify programs. This position will participate in the creation of new sustainable and well-supported service(s) as well as the support of ELN solutions to meet research goals and to empower research.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the technical delivery of a strategic ELN initiative to support research as part of the Blavatnik Initiative
Participate in the stakeholder engagement to establish requirements for an ELN service
Research and evaluate existing ELN solutions to identify viable platforms and integration strategies. Work directly with vendors on requirements, demos, implementation and support planning as well as resolve technical issues and enhancement requests.
Collaborate with HMS Researchers, IT Operations and Research Computing staff to design appropriate solution implementations, leveraging existing services whenever possible, to meet complex research needs.
Work with the Project Management Office to develop ELN pilot proposal(s) based on business needs, stakeholder support, and technical requirements
Work with HMS Security Office to evaluate, implement and manage ELN solution security and compliance
Produce pilot implementation plans, communication, and support/operational documentation
Serve as an escalation point for ELN technical issues and inquiries. Ensure collaboration on high-level troubleshooting.
Provide oversight of all daily operational systems support including monitoring and backup for existing and piloted ELN solution(s).
Collaborate with IT Engineers, Service Providers, Systems Administrators, Client Services Representatives, Co-Ops, and Interns on successful solution delivery and support.
Performs at a high level of technical competence and maturity.
Create and maintain administrative, operational and support procedures for a piloted solution(s).
Bachelor’s degree in IT or a related field, or 5-7 years related experience in IT or research IT Must have a working knowledge of Linux/UNIX command line, scripting, Active Directory (SAML) Experience with participation in technical project management methodologies.
Experience with leading complex, mission-critical, technical projects. Excellent time management, organization, and planning skills.
Strong business/systems analysis skills, proven meeting facilitation, and documentation skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to share information effectively and confidently to internal and external audiences of varying levels of technical knowledge.
Manage multiple assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
Bachelors or Masters degree in a scientific field is a plus
Experience in performing or delivering support for biological science research.
Experience working in a laboratory setting or supporting scientists. Experience with ELN solutions, and/or ELN selection and support. Experience with ELN selection, implementation and/or support.
Experience with administration of services in OnPrem and Cloud Environments Experience with AWS and OnPrem deployments and operation
Experience with Agile
This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.
