Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high speed research and development. The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise. Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.
To achieve these efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the integration, build, and ground test of Carrier Aircraft upgrades.
This position will be responsible for contributing to the design of mechanical system on the carrier aircraft such as flight control and landing gear door changes, helping with the build and test plans, and ensuring the upgrades are ready for flight. This position also includes a path towards further technical responsibilities, as desired, for the development and implementation of other segments of the Stratolaunch architecture.
You must be comfortable with component/system development and integration. This position will include evaluation of a broad range of technical data. Candidates must have an aerospace development background and relevant experience in aerospace systems integration.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Create mechanical designs supporting upgrades on the flight control system, landing gear doors, and other efforts as needed
Participate on integrated, cross discipline mechanical design where individual designers consider analysis, manufacturing, and test requirements early & continuously throughout the design cycle
Develop and perform calculation of component loads, component stresses using traditional and finite element analysis as appropriate
Participate in test verification activities, help define requirements, perform & participate in tests
Eventual transition to the Stratolaunch hypersonics program, focusing on roles in mechanical systems and mechanical/electrical integration
Develop engineering tools, as needed, to complete their tasking.
Evaluate risks and risk mitigation plans to determine if the risks are appropriate and risk mitigations are adequate
Regular and comprehensive communication to the Stratolaunch Department Lead on a weekly and monthly basis
Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems
Travel, as needed, to support the department
