The Visualization, Imaging, and Data Analysis Center (VIDA) at New York University Tandon School of Engineering is an interdisciplinary center that brings together researchers with expertise in a variety of topics, including data management, information visualization, machine learning, image analysis, and web information discovery. We develop computational methods and apply them in a wide range of practical problems from urban planning and sports analytics, to fighting crime and containing the spread of diseases.
We currently have an opening for a full-time research engineer position to work on research and development of visual analytics methods and tools. The successful candidate will work on a variety of projects, including:
DARPA’s DataDriven Discovery of Models program (D3M), which aims to enable domain experts to train and validate machine learning models without any knowledge of data science or machine learning (ML). We have designed new methods and tools to automatically synthesize ML pipelines and to support users in the task of curating these pipelines (https://vida.engineering.nyu.edu/research/d3m/).
VizierDB, which aims to simplify the process of data cleaning and debugging, which currently, is one of the main bottlenecks in the data science pipeline. We have developed Vizier, a system that integrates notebooks with a spreadsheetstyle interface and visualizations that guide and support the user in the loop.
For consideration, applicants should have obtained an MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field, have experience with web development (frontend and backend) and in creating interactive and engaging dashboards. This position will report to Professor Juliana Freire.
Write, test, and document software
Package and deploy the system for real users
Develop new or improve existing features of Visus and Vizier systems related to:
Interactive visual data exploration, analysis, and curation
Machine learning pipeline representation
AutoML pipeline comparison
Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science or related technical fields.
Strong background in machine learning and interactive information visualization.
Excellent documentation skills for both software projects as well as administrative reporting.
Code versioning tools: Git, GitHub or GitLab
System deployment tools: Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes
Software development practices: test-driven development, code-review, continuous integration (CI)
Experience working with interactive visualization (please attach demos and related material).
Ability to work independently and complete tasks.
Ability to meet deadlines.
