Position Title: Functional Safety Manager
Reports To: Manager of Systems Integration
Classification: Exempt
Status: Regular Full-time
Location: Pontiac, MI

Job Summary:
The Functional Safety Manager is responsible for the planning and coordination of functional safety for battery systems developed and produced by XALT Energy. This candidate shall have a strong technical knowledge of ISO 26262 with targeted growth into other applications covered by IEC 61508. He/She will ensure that XALT Li-ion battery systems operate properly and safely within the customer’s host system throughout the entire product lifecycle. The person is empowered with sufficient escalation authority and will be engaged with multiple cross functional development teams ensure and accurate delivery of work products associated with functional safety.

Primary Responsibilities:
Serve as the technical lead with planning and coordination of functional safety responsibilities covering the entire product lifecycle.
Establish and maintain overall product safety plan and contribute to the definition of the product architecture to ensure appropriate protection layers for both active (functional safety) and passive safety features and functions.
Define and drive the completion of ISO 26262 work products in close coordination with the hardware and software development teams.
Directly manage 3rd party assessments with accredited authorities.
Efficiently manage and assess functional safety deliverables during customer and/or supplier integration which may include structuring of DIAs and safety manuals.
Provide technical leadership for product safety analysis including HARA development, FMEDA, FTA.
Lead consolidation efforts to achieve functional safety assessment for products that span markets that are legislated by differing functional safety standards such as IEC 61508.

Additional Support Responsibilities:
Proactively support design validation teams in test plan reviews to ensure testing strategies and methods truly stress and verify design compliance and safety.
Active role in Design FMEA, particularly in areas related safety features and/or safety concept.
Support role for requirements engineering.
Maintain subject matter expertise for safety relevant standards and legislative requirements for XALT products.
Provide a supporting role to assess quality management and product development processes to ensure compliance with functional safety requirements.

Position Qualifications:
M.S. in Electrical or Controls Engineering or equivalent (BS acceptable with sufficient experience)
Minimum 5 years of experience with automotive or similar systems. Electric vehicle experience or battery integration is a plus.
3+ years of experience in functional safety programs.
Functional safety certification in ISO 26262 or IEC 61508 is strongly desired.
Familiar with requirements management tools such as DOORS, FMEA tools such as IQ-RM.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills – position requires strong interaction in multi-functional team environment particularly in high-pressure situations (e.g., launch).
Strong English skills, both spoken and written.
Must be a self-starter who takes the initiative to find solutions to technical challenges.
Must demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency with creative problem-solving methods.
Travel is expected to not exceed 10% of time including occasional international travel.
