The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Sensor Physics Engineer in the Safety and Industrial Business Group (SIBG) Lab, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
Inventing and developing sensor materials technologies, sensing systems along with robotic applications to create new product opportunities for 3M
Designing experiments, build apparatus, collect and analyze real world data to demonstrate fitness for use, robustness, and confirm efficacy in intended application
Supporting existing 3M sensing products and businesses
Leading and collaborating with research teams in 3M Corporate Research Labs and 3M business labs to strengthen sensing competencies and capabilities within 3M
Publishing and presenting knowledge within 3M and in top-tier journals and conferences
Performing comprehensive analysis of existing art and plan for and contribute to development of 3M intellectual property
Performing other duties as assigned
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:
Possess a PhD degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university (completed and verified prior to start)
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Experience with sensing systems to include fundamental understanding of materials and materials interactions with light, sound, vibration, chemical, electronic, and other stimuli
Experience developing electromechanical, robotic and applied sensing systems to include physical property transduction into a reliable electrical signal, design and development of electronic circuitry, and basic algorithm development
Strong electronic systems aptitude and problem-solving skills
Strong scientific and technical acumen, with demonstrated interest and ability to make connections between science/technology and real-world applications
Ability to deal with the ambiguity of early-stage technology development and evaluation of emerging opportunities for product opportunities
Scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations
Familiarity and experience in assessment and development of intellectual property
Strong written and verbal communication skills, networking skills, interpersonal and leadership skills
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
