The Innovation & Technology (I&T) team within West is responsible for driving the future of the company by developing innovative products designed to improve patient lives. This role is tasked with working on big ‘R’ research on behalf of the rest of the organization and will keenly focus on technology fields that are adjacent and transformational to West’s core products. The role will work within a dynamic interdisciplinary team to identify and evaluate nascent technologies and concepts. These research outputs will feed the development of new products and lead to new markets that West will need to operate within in 5 years’ time. The team will be interfacing with researchers from high-caliber academic institutions, translating potential value-adding technologies through feasibility and into reality. Projects will require the planning and performing of experiments, designing test equipment and prototypes, and integrating different principles of mechanical and electronic engineering.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Contribute to research projects across a variety of project formats, from short-term academic feasibility projects to long-term industry collaborations .
Participate in designing experimental plans and project proposals to evaluate different technologies and test hypotheses.
Assist in developing prototypes and test equipment to support research projects using fabrication workshop, electronics lab, onsite 3D printers and/or directing third party vendors as required.
Perform experiments internally and externally with academic research partners.
Collaborate with team members in different West locations as well as research students at partner universities as needed to achieve project objectives.
Solve problems using personal judgement and persevere when setbacks threaten project goals.
Provide foundational knowledge for the team across a broad set of biomedical disciplines, such as biology, medicine, chemistry, electronics, mechanics and/or other related engineering fields.
Support active research initiatives through monitor progress, making sure internal processes are followed, maintaining legal paperwork and filing IP disclosures, when applicable.
Ensure that the findings from various research projects are disseminated out internally within West, either through technical reports, presentations or creating updates on company intranet.
Travel to other North American West sites, academic research partners and/or attend targeted scientific and research conferences to present research findings.
Participate as team member on various projects within group and performs other duties as assigned based on business needs.
Education: Bachelors in biomedical engineering or equivalent multidisciplinary engineering field.
Exper ience: 3-5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device, or similarly highly regulated industry. May have advanced degree with less experience.
Ability to manage a group research projects, can either be shown in industry or via successful academic research team projects.
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate well with others and maintain research relationships.
Dependable, detail oriented, able to multi-task to support a variety of research projects and disciplines.
Willingness to learn and to explore new fields of research and understand nascent technologies.
Proficient with CAD (SolidWorks) and experienced with a variety of 3D printing technologies.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Excellent written and verbal communication and ability to articulately disseminate scientific research to a variety of different audiences, from non-technical through to expert.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Educa tion: Masters biomedical e ngineering or equivalent multidisciplinary engineering field.
Relevant research, expertise or development project experience in an emerging discipline such as life sciences, wearable diagnostics, novel drug delivery or other would be beneficial.
Proficient use of computational tools, i.e. MATLAB, Python, Arduino, LabVIEW or others.
Background in working in regulated medical device or pharmaceutical industry.
Capable of fabricating mechanical protypes, integrate electronics and programming.
Demonstrated track record of generating intellectual property.
Able to be aware of all relevant SOPs as per Company policy as they are related to the position covered by this Job Description
Must be able to travel domestically up to 15% of the time
