RAND is seeking highly motivated Research Assistants who are 2020 graduates or other recent graduates to work on a variety of national security projects as members of multi-disciplinary research teams addressing complex policy problems. Research Assistants work with teams of experienced researchers, including software developers, engineers, physicists, policy scientists, and economists. Projects may include science and technology, military logistics, military technology, military communications, and general national security issues. This is a limited duration position, not to exceed 3 years.
Research Assistants' tasks include data collection, preparation and analysis, support to modeling and simulation, computer programming, literature reviews, note taking, preparation of draft documents, and presentations and coordination of work among project team members. Research Assistants may travel with project teams and may have the opportunity to co-author reports and journal articles.
Applicants should have U.S. citizenship and excellent research and analysis skills demonstrated in coursework or work experience; solid technical and/or programming skills; familiarity with statistical packages; excellent foreign language skills; the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; and the ability to work effectively as a member of multi-disciplinary teams. Qualitative research skills such as interviews, focus groups and surveys are also sought. Applicants must be highly motivated, organized, flexible, and demonstrate a strong commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity.
Preference given to applicants with the following experience:
Active security clearance;
Experience with statistical packages (e.g. SAS, SPSS, STATA, R) and other research analytic software or computer languages (e.g. C++, Java, SQL);
Research assistant experience, either in an academic setting, in another research-oriented organization, or within a research unit of a public- or private-sector firm; or intelligence communities, or with related federal government agencies;
Proficiency in one of the following languages — Russian, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Kurdish or Arabic (language skills will be tested).
BA/BS degree required preferably with a major in engineering, computer science, economics, physics, math, statistics, data science, operations research, or other technical degree. Master's level candidates should look for Analyst positions.
