The South Carolina Department of Transportation's Design-Build Group develops and delivers some of the largest and most exciting transportation projects within the state. The Design-Build Group is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and innovative person to demonstrate their strong skills and abilities as the Structural Discipline Lead Engineer in our progressive group. The candidate must possess strong organizational, technical, communicative and adaptive skills to work in a high-energy environment where employee development and continual improvement are key values.
The successful candidate will:
Assists in the preparation of contract documents (RFQs, RFPs, special provisions, estimates, contract addendums, and ATCs) for design-build and other innovative projects. Makes structural engineering design recommendations and provides structural design review of documents submitted by the design-build teams including design criteria, design plans, specifications, reports, and other applicable submittals. Ensures design adherence to AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, SCDOT Bridge Design Manual, SCDOT Seismic Design Specifications, and other applicable FHWA and SCDOT requirements, guidelines, and specifications. Develops preliminary plans using Microstation and applicable structural design software and reviews consultant preliminary plans for structural design and constructability. Supports the design-build contract administration activities including resolving complex structural engineering construction issues, consulting with contractors, consultant engineers, State, and Federal agencies, and participates as needed in progress meetings, RFI's, Issue Papers, etc. Assists the Design-Build Section Design Manager and/or Program Manager in the management of engineering consultant contracts during design-build preparation including contract development, negotiations, cost estimating, and post-execution contract administration (invoicing, status, contract modifications, etc.). Supervises structural design staff in day-to-day design-build and innovative project delivery including EPMS, training documentation, and providing guidance to subordinates in determining learning and training needs. Makes work assignments to structural design staff as necessary in the design of major highway projects including design build and other innovative contracting methods. Performs other related duties as required.
A bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology and six (6) years of engineering work experience, which must include journey-level engineering work experience and one (1) year of experience in a technical supervisory capacity; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.
Necessary Special Requirement: This position requires registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of SC as prescribed in SC State Code Sections 40-22-20 and 40-22-30.
