Job Duties

The Mission of the Ohio Department of Commerce

is to safeguard Ohio’s citizens and visitors, their property

and resources while ensuring reliable marketplaces

conducive to business growth and prosperity.

The Division of Industrial Compliance and its associated boards ensure
Ohioans are safe in public buildings such as businesses, educational institutions and
municipal buildings. This includes drafting and applying the Ohio Building Code;
conducting appeal hearings; issuing variances to code requirements; licensing
commercial contractors; inspecting boilers, elevators and bedding; and regulating
ski tramways. The division has responsibility for portions of the Manufactured Homes
Program, and licenses installers and parks. The division also oversees Ohio’s minimum
wage, prevailing wage and minor labor law programs.

The Division of Industrial Compliance is currently seeking an experienced electrical safety inspector to serve in the eastern part of the state. Primary duties of the position include:

following a daily itinerary as scheduled by office dispatcher & supervisor,
performs technical field inspections of construction projects under the jurisdiction of the state to ensure compliance with electrical standards of the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) & approved electrical specifications;
performs field inspections using approved architectural &/or engineer designed drawings;
coordinates inspections with the other inspectors & supervisor when needed during the course of construction;
conducts inspections of existing buildings & structures for safety to determine if Certificates of Occupancy may be issued;
consults periodically with building & structure owners, design professionals, contractors, etc., concerning violations found at construction site;
itemizes all violations & reports same to section;
makes recommendations for issuance of adjudication orders to stop construction or correct violations;
offers assistance or advice to alleviate problems
prepares detailed reports (written or electronic) on inspections performed for submission to the bureau office;
attends training seminars in order to stay updated with the latest electrical safety standards; attends training/seminars in order to keep abreast of technology & software changes to operate computer or electronic device to perform inspections, emails & documentation of all related duties as required

Qualifications

Certificate of competency as electrical safety inspector as issued by Board of Building Standards, per Section 3783.03 of Revised Code; valid driver's license.

Please note: an agility assessment will be conducted to ensure capability to endure hazardous elements of this position

Knowledge of electrical safety guidelines & government regulations, electrical inspection practices & procedures, Ohio building codes & statutes concerning new construction, alterations, additions & changes in occupancy of existing structures*; techniques, tools & principles involved in production of construction documents; customer service standards.

Skill in electrical installation & inspection; operation of tablet using business office software*; operation of motor vehicle.

Ability to understand system of mechanical procedures; define problems, collect technical data & determine violations of electrical codes & recommend corrective action; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; read & interpret building plans, electrical specifications & trade manuals; handle sensitive contacts & inquiries with public & government officials; prepare inspection reports & maintain accurate records; bend stretch, twist or reach with body, arms & legs; lift, push, pull or carry objects up to 35 pounds.
