What You Will Do
The Space Data Science & Systems Group (ISR‐3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking qualified Embedded Software Engineers to participate in the execution of our portfolio of space and ground based programs. ISR-3 is an integral part of the Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division, and has its core capabilities in software development, mission operations, data exploitation, data systems development and integration.
Embedded software aspects of the program areas involve some of the following general types of work. This work may be in support of low-level (hardware interface), mid-level, or high-level (application) software development:
Lead design and development of real-time embedded/flight software following a rigorous software development process
Lead design and development of flight software for use on radiation-hardened processors to control, process, acquire, and distribute data from scientific satellite payloads
Lead design and development of embedded software for ground-based processors that simulate a satellite spacecraft/payload interface used during the development, testing, and integration of the satellite payload onto the spacecraft
Write device drivers to interface with custom hardware
Define overall embedded software architecture and interfaces between different software components
Develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and other system level requirements
Interface with end users, principle scientists, principle engineers, and fellow colleagues to understand payload requirements, deliverables and time-frames, coordinate resources, plan, track, and execute project plans
Identify, develop and/or implement new technologies, capabilities, processes, or infrastructure
Contribute to the development of progress reports for project leaders/sponsors and assist with defining project plans and milestones
Assist leadership in scheduling commitments and resources
Coordinate and monitor the work of junior team members
Provide mentoring to other team members
Provide key capability for internal and external funding proposals
Contribute to peer review of work of others across organizations or disciplines
Contribute to program-level reviews
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following electrical engineering or computer science focus areas:
Embedded Systems Application Programming
Real-Time Operating Systems
Digital Logic Design
Operating System Design
Computer Processor Architectures and Design
Demonstrated experience with C/C++
Demonstrated experience with version control (Git, SVN, Mercurial)
Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and create detailed action plans
Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team, with good communication
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Six years of professional software development experience
Experience in formal software development processes
Experience with the development, deployment and operation of sensors
Experience with laboratory and/or field use of instruments
Experience with satellite sensors and programs
Experience in large data‐set management and exploitation
Experience with a real-time operating system (e.g. VxWorks, RTEMS, etc.)
Experience with enterprise collaboration/development software (e.g. Jira, Confluence, Jenkins)
VHDL or Verilog experience
Test benches for FPGA- or ASIC-based design
Python or GO programming experience
Experience estimating task completion effort
Experience with formal test plan development and test execution including unit testing and functional testing
Experience with remote sensing, digital image/signal processing techniques, and basic geography concepts such as map projections
Active "Q" Clearance
Advanced degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is required. Degree from an ABET accredited college or university desired.
Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
ISR is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of complex systems in secure and open environments in support of data acquisition and telemetry systems, large-scale data storage and archival, embedded systems, real-time control systems, computer-aided design, scientific programming and computing, high-performance computing, reconfigurable computing, machine learning, data exploitation, data product delivery, and distributed sensor networks.
