Our Senior Substation Engineer position will offer you an exciting opportunity to help our Clients provide safe and reliable sources of Electric power. You should be a self-motivated professional engineer with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering along with 5 years of design experience in Power Substations and a desire to grow personally as well as professionally.
Provide detailed physical design of electric utility substations to include one-line diagrams, selection of substation equipment, writing of substation equipment specifications, grounding system design conduit and cable sizing/routing, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, substation physical layouts, construction cost estimates and project scheduling.
Act as the project engineer for multiple projects and direct the work of less experienced engineers and drafters.
Perform physical engineering design & equipment specification functions for substation projects from 15 kV to 765 kV.
Specify, review, inspect, and approve electrical equipment to be used in a substation.
Review & maintain engineering oversight of substation physical designers, including bus design, equipment ratings, and safety/maintenance clearances.
Conduct technical evaluations on procured equipment and perform witness testing for major equipment, such as substation power transformers, breakers and instrument transformers, and substation steel.
Perform necessary calculations in support of engineering designs, including short circuit, step & touch potential, battery sizing, thermal rating of equipment, etc. Prepare backup design documentation with calculations.
Should have an in-depth understanding of substation protection and control systems.
Interface and collaborate with Civil/Structural staff and provide technical support as required.
Display strong communication and interpersonal skills and has the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
Preparing equipment specifications, analyze bids, and make recommendations for purchase.
Developing scope of work, conceptual design for the projects, and execution plans.
Preparing engineering and construction cost and man-hour estimates and schedules.
Meet and correspond with clients or outside contractors.
Support construction efforts and equipment commissioning.
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
10 years of progressive experience in design of substation engineering projects for large industrial or electric utilities.
Demonstrated experience in detailed physical design of air insulated electric substations from 15 kV and up.
Specific experience performing all aspects associated with substation design, including: design criteria, equipment specifications, one line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, grounding, conduit plans, foundation plans, material lists, relay and control systems, control schematics and wiring diagrams
Experience with industry standard design tools such as AUTOCAD, AMPCALC, CDEGS, etc.
Sound working knowledge of applicable ANSI/IEEE industry standards for physical clearances.
Must have good written & verbal communication skills and be willing to travel as needed to project site.
In addition to the basic qualifications, the following are highly desired:
Professional Engineer license (P.E.) or Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification
10 years of progressive experience in design of power substations and switch station engineering projects
Experience in EPC project delivery, Construction, Startup & Commissioning experience 345 kV and 765 kV experience
Experience in both Electric Utility, Industrial, and consulting engineering environments
Experience with large capacitor bank installations, including Series Compensation/FACTS installations and Static VAR compensation a plus
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is a must. Candidate having a Professional Engineer registration is preferred.
Candidate must have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Minimum 5 years of experience (completion of master’s degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience) in physical design of high voltage (69kV and above) air and gas insulated substations and power systems.
Energetic, self-starter who can function independently in a team environment. The successful candidate must be knowledgeable in the following areas:
Substation physical layout and electrical clearances;
Substation rigid and strain bus design;
Substation ground grid design;
Substation surge and direct stroke protection;
Substation raceway design;
Relevant codes and standards such as ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NEMA and NESC.
Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communications skills. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments, and of devising new approaches to problems encountered. Ability to work in a team environment and to coordinate the work of various engineering disciplines and contractors to complete an integrated project.
Candidate will be subjected to industrial and power plant atmospheres, exposed to areas that have high voltages and electrical currents present in low-medium-high-extra high voltage substations, and intense noises. Candidate may be required to wear hearing protection, safety harness, and other personal protective equipment (PPE). Must be able to crawl, climb, and able to pass a fit for duty physical exam.
Salary Level: $80K – $120K
