Job Summary :
The person hired for the position of Manufacturing Engineer will apply extensive knowledge and experience to develop and refine new and existing manufacturing processes for optimal safety, quality, and productivity. The plant produces adhesives, binders, catalysts, curatives, optical resins and polymers for use by other 3M divisions. The factory operates around-the-clock, seven days a week, and the work environment is dynamic and engaging.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Respond to EHS incidents, quality issues, and audit findings with thorough root cause analysis and highly effective corrective actions
Product maintenance activities include providing run coverage, maintaining factory operating procedures and preparing mass balance and unit cost information
New product introduction activities include production scale-up and product transfer to/from other production sites’ stream improvements, cost reduction, productivity benefits, and cycle time improvements; may also include leading in incident investigations, Process Hazard Analysis, Pre-startup Safety Reviews, and Management of Change reviews to drive safety, quality, cost, operability and/or regulatory improvements
Equipment activities include evaluating process equipment operability and safety to make recommendations for capital improvement projects and equipment renewal; a large part of the equipment activities includes participating on equipment project teams to design, install, checkout and startup new and modified equipment
Work closely with production and maintenance teams to resolve and improve manufacturing process and equipment downtime issues
Create and update standard work, operating procedures, and test methods
Process improvement activities including lean six sigma projects
Willingness to be on-call.
Bachelor's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university
Minimum of two (2) combined years experience in a private, public, government or military environment in one and/or more of the following areas: EHS, quality, manufacturing engineering, process engineering, product engineering, and/or product development
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
Minimum three (3) years of experience in process engineering within a manufacturing and/or industrial setting
Experience in chemical manufacturing with an understanding of polymer chemistry
Experience in reactions, separations and distillation and/or mixing and milling
Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) covered processes
Experience with Lean Six Sigma
Strong Leadership Attributes, sound project management skills and ability to lead cross-functional teams
Effective written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills
Capital equipment project engineering
Lean manufacturing experience or education
Knowledge of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000
Location: Cottage Grove, MN
Travel: May include up to 10% [domestic/international]
